The Outer Worlds 3: Obsidian Halts Plans After Sequel Sales Slump

Obsidian Entertainment has confirmed they have no plans for The Outer Worlds 3. Despite the cult status of the original, the reality of the industry has caught up with the franchise.

The Outer Worlds 3: Obsidian Halts Plans After Sequel Sales Slump

Obsidian Entertainment has officially halted plans for The Outer Worlds 3, leaving the future of the Halcyon colony in total darkness.

Despite the franchise’s signature wit, a combination of massive development costs and a crowded release schedule has forced the studio to pivot away from its satirical sci-fi epic.

In a recent interview with Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, Obsidian revealed that The Outer Worlds 2 was in development alongside Avowed, and because of that, both failed to meet sales expectations.

The Outer Worlds: Why the Sequel Cycle Ended Early

The cancellation isn’t a creative choice, but a financial necessity. The Outer Worlds 2 (TOW2) was in development for over six years, a timeline inflated by the pandemic and significant technological hurdles.

This prolonged cycle sent production costs skyrocketing, making the game’s commercial performance even more critical.

Ultimately, TOW2 failed to meet Microsoft’s sales expectations. While the first game was a surprise hit with over 5 million copies sold, the sequel struggled to replicate that magic, reportedly failing to reach even 1 million units in its first three months.

The “Year of Obsidian” (2025) saw three major launches in eight months, Avowed, Grounded 2, and TOW2, but this blitz ended up being “the result of things going wrong” rather than a strategic masterstroke, according to Design Director Josh Sawyer.

The Outer Worlds vs The Obsidian Resource Crunch

You’ve got to feel for the devs. Obsidian is an elite squad, but they aren’t an infinite army. With roughly 280 people on staff, they’ve been juggling a massive plate: Avowed, Grounded 2, and The Outer Worlds 2 were all fighting for oxygen at the same time.

Recent reports indicate that while Avowed 2 is getting the green light, The Outer Worlds 3 has been left off the roadmap entirely.

Instead of planning for a trilogy, Obsidian is pivoting to a “shorter development cycle” strategy. They’re focusing on polishing what they have rather than chasing another decade-long development cycle for a third installment.

Is The Outer Worlds Worth Buying?

If you haven’t jumped into The Outer Worlds 2 yet, don’t let the lack of a third game scare you off. It’s still one of the best first-person RPGs you can play right now, packed with the kind of choice-driven storytelling that makes your decisions actually feel heavy.

Are you ready to say goodbye to Halcyon, or do you think Microsoft should give Obsidian the budget for one last trip to the stars?
