System Shock 2 Patch 1.3 overhauls netcode & modding [Update]

Nightdive Studios drops Patch 1.3, drastically improving multiplayer stability and QoL features

Key Takeaways: The Quick Answer

  • Network Overhaul: A completely rewritten network driver drastically reduces multiplayer disconnects and desyncs.
  • Steam Deck Gyro: Native gyroscope support is here, alongside major gamepad and accessibility improvements.
  • PC Modding Upgrades: Expanded support for ZIP files and loose folders makes running custom fan missions incredibly easy.

Nightdive Studios just pushed Patch 1.3 for the System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster. If you put off a co-op run due to network drops, it is time to reinstall.

According to the official patch notes, the developers completely rewrote the network driver. This means fewer random disconnects when you are fighting for your life against the Many. The team also upgraded the core game to the latest version of their proprietary Kex Engine.

Quality of Life Upgrades and Steam Deck Support

Playing retro survival horror on a modern handheld just got vastly better. Patch 1.3 adds native gyroscope support directly for the Steam Deck.

Accessibility took a major step forward as well. You can now disable screen flashes when taking damage or overloading psi—a massive win for photosensitive players.

Gamepads received some much-needed attention across the board. You can swap inventory and menu buttons or hit a dedicated Quicksave button directly from the main menu.

PC Modding and Performance Fixes

For the PC crowd, managing fan missions is no longer a headache. The patch adds native support for ZIP files and loose folders. Nightdive also fixed the load order for default mods and updated both the patch_ext mod and SHTUP to beta 4.

According to the official patch notes, the core game now runs on the latest version of the proprietary Kex Engine. They also threw in a highly requested accessibility option to turn off screen flashes when taking damage—a massive relief for photosensitive players.

Behind the Scenes with Nightdive

Alongside the massive patch, Nightdive released a new episode of their official developer podcast. Locke Vincent sat down with developer Sam Reki to talk shop.

They discussed the creative process, technical hurdles, and gave advice to newcomers jumping into the remaster for the first time.

Between the exhaustive bug fixes and the active community communication, it is clear Nightdive is working hard to preserve this 1999 classic.
