Can The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Beat the $1.3 Billion Record? The Stunning First Trailer Just Dropped

Nintendo and Illumination have just unveiled the very first trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. We’ll give you a thousand guesses, it’s not only magnificent, but also a true best-of of the plumber’s entire saga.

This is an opportunity to recall that the film will be co-financed by Nintendo and Universal Pictures, and released in theaters by the latter starting in April 2026 worldwide. The exact date will differ depending on the country, notably with a release on April 1st in France or the 3rd in the United States.

Towards a new record for video game adaptations? The challenge of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

Sticking with the numbers, let’s remember that as of this writing, with its $1.3 billion in profit, The Super Mario Bros. Movie remains the most profitable film in the history of video game adaptations. This is no small feat, as neither Sonic the Hedgehog 3 from Paramount Pictures, nor A Minecraft Movie from Warner Bros. have managed to dethrone it.

So, will this record be shattered by its sequel? It’s still too early to say, but what is certain is that we will find all the actors who already made its predecessor a success:

  • Chris Pratt as Mario
  • Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach
  • Charlie Day as Luigi
  • Jack Black as Bowser
  • Keegan-Michael Key as Toad
  • Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek

A high-flying cast that will this time be joined by Brie Larson (Captain Marvel) and Benny Safdie (Oppenheimer) who will play the characters of Rosalina and, hold on tight, Bowser Junior, respectively.

References by the thousands

Because yes, while we already knew that rumors of a Super Mario World adaptation had fallen flat, we still didn’t know the full extent of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s ambitions.

More than just a film focused on the two Wii adventures, it’s an ode to all recent Mario games that is being announced. It would probably be too long to list all the nods, but in no particular order, we still find: 

In short, it’s as if Illumination has pushed all the reference sliders to the max. And visually, at least, we’re not going to lie, it works darn well. Now replace the cringey dad rock that plagued the first film with reprises of the games’ original soundtrack, and we’ll be sold.

The story so far: what roles for Rosalina and Bowser Jr.?

Once again, the film will be directed by the duo Aaron Horvath / Michael Jelenic, with the screenplay written by Matthew Fogel. Beyond that, however, we don’t know much about the story. We imagine it will involve Bowser Junior trying to free his father, who is still miniaturized following the events of the first film.

From there, guessing Rosalina’s role in this affair is hard to say… Especially since we must note the notable absence of Yoshi in this trailer, who was teased two years ago. A lot of questions, and very few answers, in short, but no doubt we will have other clips to dissect between now and the film’s cinema release in April 2026.
