Subnautica 2 Leaked Footage Shared Online, Unknown Worlds Issues a Statement
Key Takeaways
  • Early Access Breach: Subnautica 2 gameplay footage and cracked builds have appeared online just days before the official May 14 release.
  • Developer Warning: Unknown Worlds Entertainment confirmed the leaks are incomplete development versions that lack stability and official features like multiplayer.
  • Security Risks: Fans are cautioned against downloading unofficial files due to the high risk of malware and the absence of future updates provided by official platforms.

Subnautica 2 is the latest title to fall victim to leaks. Just two days before its Early Access launch, reports of it being cracked and leaked surfaced online. And today, gameplay footage and some images have been shared across social media. While the reviews have been stellar, leaks are just dirty business. Not only does it take away sales from the team that deserves it and spoil the game, security risk is very high as pirated copies can include malware.

Subnautica 2 Leaks Days Ahead of Early Access Launch

The gaming industry has had a difficult run with security lately. This situation follows a string of high-profile incidents including the leak of Forza Horizon 6 three days ago. It joins a growing list of recent leaks like those of Directive 8020, Pragmata, and Death Stranding 2.

Even with Denuvo and other DRM solutions in place, publishers still haven’t found a way to completely stop leaks from happening. And now, the latest game caught up in this situation is the highly anticipated Subnautica 2.

Shortly after the game’s preorder and preloading period went live, reports started circulating online claiming that a cracked full-game build had already made its way around certain communities and pirate sites. Before long, screenshots and gameplay footage began appearing across social media platforms.

Thankfully, one of the people sharing footage on X mentioned that they still bought the game because “they deserve it,” which at least sparked some positive reactions from fans who were concerned about the situation hurting the developers.

The community is currently trying to pinpoint the source of the breach. According to Reddit user Yiruf, there is apparently an influencer/reviewer leaking encryption keys. Another user S1DC replied with a different theory, claiming that some reviewers or creators with access to early builds may have compromised systems, with third parties allegedly monitoring their computers to steal and release files whenever possible. There has even been some speculation involving Krafton too, though these theories remain largely unfounded.

These rumors are likely to continue to go wild and circulate until Unknown Worlds Entertainment investigates the source of the leak. As of writing, the studio has confirmed the leak and shares that it’s not the complete early access experience. Here’s the full statement issued to IGN:

“We’ve identified that unofficial builds of Subnautica 2 are currently circulating online. These builds are incomplete development versions and do not reflect the content or gameplay experience being prepared for the official release. Files distributed through unofficial channels cannot be verified for safety or stability, and certain features or content may not function as intended. The complete Subnautica 2 Early Access experience, including multiplayer support, as well as all future patches and updates, will be delivered exclusively through official builds on our partner platforms”

While the leak, or any leak, is a shame for any game release, it’s comforting to know that the community reviews are stellar. So all of us who preordered the game are more assured that we’re getting something spectacular come launch day.

Subnautica 2 launches on May 14th for PC via Steam and Epic, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox Game Pass. Preloading is live on all platforms.
