Subnautica 2 is No Longer Listed as Published by Krafton
Krafton has disappeared from Subnautica 2’s Steam, Epic, and Xbox listings following Ted Gill’s reinstatement.
If the line “there’s no such thing as bad publicity” can ever be truer, it’s with Subnautica 2. At this point, even those who haven’t played the first two games probably have come across the upcoming sequel thanks to its residency in the headlines. The Krafton-Unknown Worlds saga continues as the former no longer shows up as publisher in digital storefronts.
Krafton VS Former Unknown Worlds Executives
For a while, the situation between Krafton and Unknown Worlds Entertainment had been simmering in the background, mostly playing out as a messy back-and-forth.
The dispute centered on the sudden removal of key leadership figures (Ted Gill, Charlie Cleveland, and Max McGuire) which Krafton framed as a necessary internal decision as they were apparently neglecting their duties and “abandoning” the studio. However, the developers shot back, claiming it was a hostile takeover designed to avoid a massive $250 million earnout bonus that Unknown Worlds was on track to hit.
Then last month, in what many saw as a turning point, the court ruled against Krafton, ordering the company to reinstate Ted Gill as CEO of Unknown Worlds with “full operational authority.” While the ruling didn’t force the same for Cleveland and McGuire, Gill’s return is a huge win for the team.
What had once sounded like internal drama started to look more like a coordinated power struggle, especially after more details surfaced including a screenshot, published by Game Developer, of a takeover conversation between Krafton CEO CH Kim and Unknown Worlds newly-appointed CFO Richard Yoon. On top of that, there was evidence pertaining to a ChatGPT-backed strategy for the takeover.
One of the biggest sighs of relief for the developers comes from the earnout extension which was also part of the ruling. Since Krafton’s interference stalled the project, the court ruled that the deadline for the studio to hit its performance bonuses would be extended by the exact amount of time Gill was away. This gives the original team a fair shot at the money they were promised before the legal drama began.
Is Krafton no longer the publisher of Subnautica 2?
Over the past week, people keeping a close eye on Subnautica 2 noticed something odd. Krafton’s name was no longer listed as the publisher on the game’s store pages across Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox. The change wasn’t just a storefront glitch either as SteamDB logs showed that the listing had been updated.
There hasn’t been any official statement from either side about this change. Given everything that’s happened, it’s hard to imagine this being a routine update. The absence of Krafton’s name, even if temporarily, suggests that the relationship between publisher and developer is still very much in flux and points to Gill exercising that “full operational authority” to its maximum extent.
Despite the legal chaos, the game itself is finally nearing the surface. The team is now operating under a renewed sense of security and the project is back on its “original” track.
Subnautica 2 is currently scheduled to launch into Early Access in May 2026 for PC and Xbox Series X|S.
