As the largest gaming platform, Steam is constantly striving for improvements for its users. With the new update, Valve has taken a good step towards accessibility.

New overlay and in-game overlay
Overlay update to arrive in approximately 4-6 weeks
The new search function
Valve wants to improve two aspects, they want to adapt their overlay and they want to enhance the search function.
You can already test the first new feature, which is the improved search function, allowing you to find games much easier, especially when you’ve made spelling mistakes. For example, Steam now finds the game Hogwarts Legacy when you type “hgwart”.
In addition to that, you can now easily search for your favorite studio on Steam and discover all of their games.
However, you can only search for studios or developers if they have their own shop page on Steam, otherwise they will not appear in the search.
But not only can you search for specific studios, but also for tags such as action, where you will be shown all games with the action tag.
You can also filter out certain content that you don’t want to see, for example, if you don’t want to see early access titles, you can now easily set this in the settings.
The other major aspect that Valve wants to improve is the Steam Overlay. This includes both the regular overlay and especially the in-game overlay, which you can open with Shift+Tab by default.
The original purpose of the in-game overlay was to chat quickly with friends, but now with the new update, a new overlay with new features will be added.
The new overlay will be customizable, so you can see only what you want to see. For example, you can display achievements or view community guides.
With the new update, you can also pin notes such as tips from a walkthrough in the game, so you can quickly refer to them.
The regular Steam overlay will also be adjusted and modernized.
In addition to the aforementioned features, Steam also wants to simplify notifications, which can often cause problems or be displayed incorrectly.
Your screenshots will also be better organized in the future, and you can view them in the new in-game overlay.
For macOS and Linux users, there is also good news. The new hardware acceleration is expected to make Steam run much smoother in the future.
When will the rest of the update come?
Now that the new search function is already available, the question is when the new overlay and other improvements will arrive.
Unfortunately, Valve has not provided any specific information on this, but you can already test the features in the Steam Beta Client. Typically, it takes about 4 to 6 weeks for the updates to transition from the Beta Client to the regular Client.
