Steam’s new Refund Policies tighten the Rules for Advanced Access

Yesterday, Steam changed its refund policies. Find out what’s changing and what stays the same here.

Main Information

  • Advanced Access playtime is now added to total playtime.
  • Games can be refunded with less than two hours of playtime.

New Steam Refund Policies

The latest change to Steam’s refund policy only applies to games offering Advanced Access. This means, for example, when you purchase a Deluxe Edition, allowing you to play the game three days before others. It’s not about games in Early Access, as some may think, but strictly games with Advanced Access.

Steam Refund

Until recently, playtime during Advanced Access wasn’t added to the refund time on Steam. So, you could play the game for many hours during this time, then return it. This is now different. Playtime during Advanced Access is now counted towards the total playtime. This changes things, as the old two-hour barrier now applies even to Advanced Access.

Current Steam Refund Policies

Currently, on Steam, you’re eligible for a refund if you:

  1. Have played it for less than 2 hours.
  2. Have owned it for less than 14 days.

However, this only applies to purchases made directly through Steam. Unfortunately, refunding keys on Steam is not possible.
