Steam Families Explained: Share Games Easily & Save with Cheap CD Keys

Last year, Valve made significant changes to the look and features of their Steam app. In February 2023, we saw the Steam Deck UI replacing the UI in Big Picture, and in June of the same year, a major update to the store UI to make it more modern.

Now it’s time for Family Sharing, a rather popular feature used by many players with multiple members who share gaming as a hobby, which will be replaced by Steam Families going forward.

What is the new Steam Families and How to Join

Available today in the Beta section of the Steam Client, Steam Families will replace Family Sharing and Steam Family View. It will now be easier to manage who has access to the Parent account’s library, being able to add up to 5 family members. Members will have access to the entire game catalogue of that account. There will, of course, be options to limit which games each member has access to, thanks to parental control tools, as well as setting maximum playtime and requiring approval for game purchases.

To join the Steam Families Beta, simply go to Settings (click on Steam in the top left), go to Interface, and in the Beta Participation section of the Client, select Steam Families Beta from the drop-down menu. You’ll see a restart request, and you’ll now be able to use Steam Families. Going to Account Details (click on your Avatar in the top right) you’ll see the Family Management option.

The new features of Steam Families

There are many new features added to the ones already established by Family Sharing. In fact, not only can we have up to 5 accounts linked to a Parent Account, but we can designate their roles as Adult, who will have more or less the same rights as the Primary account, and Child, who will be subject to further library limitations. There are also options to remove members, as well as limitations to prevent a member from switching between “families” too quickly.

The friendly Steam Family from Portal

The most interesting thing is how with Steam Families, it will be possible to play co-op in the same game with the default option activated (developers can remove it though), whereas with Family Sharing, only one member at a time could access that particular game and be kicked out. Additionally, saves, achievements, and bonuses will be tied to each account. Another novelty is the ability to request the Parent account to purchase a game, thus avoiding the need to change accounts or give the credit card to the Child. Furthermore, the Steam shop points will be distributed to the account that requested the game instead of the one that paid for it.

In short, a significant improvement that will allow members of the same family to have a single large account and save a lot, especially when combined with Allkeyshop, which helps you find the best prices on your new games by comparing various stores and notifying you of discounts and special promotions.
