The Simpsons: Hit & Run Writer Gives Fans New Hope
For over two decades, fans have clamored for a remake of The Simpsons: Hit & Run, a cult classic trapped in a licensing limbo that fans refuse to forget. Now, after comments from the game’s writer, the pixel-perfect love letter to Springfield that defined a generation of PlayStation 2 and GameCube memories may see a long-awaited return.
The man who helped pen the original script for 2003’s The Simpsons: Hit & Run, executive producer Matt Selman, has teased fans that you can “never say never” to a remake.
Sleman was speaking to People, celebrating the 800th episode of The Simpsons, where he is a showrunner, stating that he would “love” to see a remastered version, while calming excitement by declaring it a “complicated corporate octopus to try to make that happen.”
The “Never Say Never” Moment: What Matt Selman Actually Revealed?
While Selman previously described a revival as “complicated” back in 2021, his tone in March 2026 , although not completely shifted, has given some hope of seeing it one day.
Selman acknowledged the massive cult success and the relentless fan demand that hasn’t faded in twenty years. By moving to a “never say never” stance, he may have given the most significant hint yet that the internal conversations at Disney might finally be shifting.
The Hurdles: Why hasn’t it happened yet?
The primary obstacle isn’t a lack of interest, as Selmen says “we know people love it.” Instead, it’s the “corporate octopus” of licensing. The rights to the game are tangled between Disney, Activision, and the original creators.
Unless these massive entities can agree on a profit-sharing model, the game remains trapped in a legal stalemate. However, the re-emergence of New Radical Games (the original development studio), previously known as Radical Entertainment, suggests the original talent is ready if the lawyers ever finish their coffee.
