Shenmue 4 Trailer Is Fake, Says Creator, Who Admits Studio Ys Net Is Considering Taking Legal Action

After a “leaked” Shenmue 4 trailer appeared online last week, the series’ creator, Yu Suzuki, dashed fans’ hopes by confirming it has “absolutely no connection” to his studio, Ys Net, and that they are considering taking potential legal action.

Shenmue 4 Trailer Is Fake, Says Creator, Who Admits Studio Ys Net Is Considering Taking Legal Action

Shenmue fans believed a trailer released last week was a glimpse of the long-awaited Shenmue 4. However, legendary developer Sega Yu Suzuki says his studio, whose logo appeared in the trailer, has “no connection” to it, confirming it to be fake.

Apologizing for any confusion to fans, Ys Net said the studio has “not released any trailers, footage or other promotional materials related to ‘Shenmue 4.”

The Viral Forgery

The community believed they were finally getting their wish when the, what is now believed to be AI-generated, trailer dropped last week, showing series protagonist Ryo Hazuki running around town completing various little jobs.

While many fans were skeptical due to the lack of official confirmation from Ys Net and Sega, and the fact that the trailer was posted on a YouTube channel with barely a following, it still went viral within the community, which Yu Suzuki says caused “confusion.”

Shutting Down the Rumors

In its statement on X, Ys Net confirmed that “a video has been posted on social media which uses our company logo without permission, falsely giving the impression that it is an official ‘Shenmue 4’ related video produced by us.”

The studio “sincerely” apologized to fans for “any confusion” the fake trailer may have caused, stating it wants to “ensure the proper and accurate dissemination of information” while asking for “understanding and cooperation” from fans.

Ys Net Weighs Legal Options

Ys Net tells fans that it recognizes “that the unauthorized use of our logo, and any act that misleads viewers into believing such content is official, constitutes a serious issue that may amount to trademark infringement and unfair competition.”

Not leaving any doubt as to what the studio thinks about the false trailer, Ys Net says it is “currently working with relevant parties and preparing appropriate measures, including potential legal action.”

The Fake Trailer Confirms Intense Demand for Shenmue

While the viral trailer proved fake, the community’s reaction confirms the intense demand for Shenmue 4. Until Ys Net, Yu Suzuki, and Sega are ready for an official announcement, fans must take “leaked” information or footage of any potential new entry in the series with a pinch of salt.
