On February 9, 2026, just twenty days after 2XKO finally hit PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, Riot announced it was laying off approximately 80 employees, almost half of the development team, as the studio downsizes for long-term benefits.

Riot spent nearly 10 years working on 2xKO, previously “Project L,” and acquired Radiant Entertainment in 2016 to ensure they had the “FGC DNA” required for a fighting game masterpiece. Yet, the game’s 1.0 release on anaury 20, 2026, hit a wall almost immediately upon expanding from PC to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

According to Executive Producer Tom Cannon in a recent update, the engagement “momentum” simply didn’t justify a team of that size for the long haul.

This serves as a sobering reminder for the industry: even a game polished over a decade can fail to meet its internal Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) within less than a month of launch.

Riot Games vs. The Sustainable FGC Model

Cutting 50% of a team isn’t a “restructure,” but an emergency pivot. While Riot insists the 2026 Competitive Series will proceed as planned, the optics are disastrous for player confidence.

The Final Verdict on Performance

The gameplay is fluid, the netcode is revolutionary, and the tag-team “Fuse” system is a genuine innovation for the genre. But a fighting game is only as strong as its community’s belief in its longevity.

The February 9 layoffs have stained the launch window, turning what should have been a celebration into a conversation about sustainability and job security.
