Resident Evil 4 Remake Removes Denuvo and Trades It for a New DRM Headache

Capcom has finally gotten rid of Denuvo in Resident Evil 4 Remake which on paper, sounds like the kind of news PC gamers usually celebrate. For years, Denuvo has been one of the most criticized DRM solutions in gaming, often blamed for performance issues and intrusive behavior.
But in this case, it was not celebrated. While the game may now be Denuvo-free, it has been replaced with Enigma DRM, and when comparing the two, many players are already saying they would rather have Denuvo back if being completely DRM-free is not an option.
Resident Evil 4 Remake is now Denuvo-Free but Worse Off
It is still contested how much Denuvo truly affects gameplay performance, storage, or overall system behavior, but one thing is clear. Denuvo is arguably one of the most disliked pieces of software in PC gaming. So much so that many players avoid buying new releases altogether when it is included, choosing to wait until publishers eventually remove it. And sometimes, they do. When that happens, it is usually met with relief, praise, and a renewed interest. However, that’s not the case with Resident Evil 4 Remake.
Capcom did not make any official announcement about removing Denuvo but a recent update spotted on SteamDB revealed that the anti-tamper tech had quietly been taken out. Unfortunately instead of it being DRM-free, it was replaced with Enigma DRM which is another protection system that has quickly become the center of frustration. Reports from players have been spreading across forums and social media and the feedback has been overwhelmingly negative.
According to multiple reports, Enigma DRM is causing noticeable performance drops especially on Steam Deck. Some PC players are reporting that the game now uses over 1GB more system RAM than before.
There’s also a widely shared report that notes a significant FPS drop from around 220 FPS at 1440p down to roughly 120 FPS on a system running an RTX 5070 paired with an Intel Core Ultra 7 265KF. Even allowing for variance between systems, the scale of the drop is huge.
The issues do not stop at raw performance. Several mods appear to be broken following the update including REFramework support which is widely used by the modding community. Then there’s the cherry on top. Just a few hours after the update went live, Enigma DRM was reportedly cracked.
At this point, fans are asking Capcom to reverse the update or, at the very least, acknowledge that the change has left the PC version in a worse state than before. Whether that means removing Enigma DRM entirely or rethinking the current implementation, players want answers.
Who would have thought that the day would come when PC gamers can say, “Put Denuvo back in the game.”
