How 4J Studios Built the Rixel Technology

The development team behind the console editions of Minecraft is reshaping the structural foundation of the sandbox genre. 4J Studios has deployed a proprietary graphics technology called Rixels to its upcoming title, Reforj.

Traditional voxel graphics rely heavily on square shapes, which often result in blurred diagonal lines and high memory costs. To bypass this, the Elements Engine team combined vector graphic shapes with traditional 2D bitmap technology.

According to 4J Studios CTO Richard Reavy, this system allows the game to maintain a crisp visual identity without draining hardware resources. The shift to Rixels means textures that previously required a 512×512 resolution and 4MB of storage now operate at roughly 20×20. This allows them to consume just 72KB per material.


What Does the Rixel Update Add to Reforj?

Title Update 8 adds the complete Rixel visual overhaul, post-processing bloom lighting, and explorable ancient ruins to Reforj. Players will also find the new Gateway Terminal, a structure that requires Aura deposits to function and allows travel between different generated biomes and the Gateway Nexus.

This update marks a fundamental shift away from the game’s initial faceted graphics. Alongside the optimized geometric textures, the integration of bloom and glow effects applies directly to emissive elements in the environment.

Players can now use the light from flora like Ember Stems and Aurberries to navigate darker areas. At the same time, enemy mobs like Tunnelers feature glowing eyes to signal danger in the dark.

The update also populates the world generation with the ruins of a lost civilization. These structures contain loot designed to assist in early survival and base building.

The Future of Reforj on Xbox Series X|S

Reforj remains in an early pre-alpha state, but the developers are prioritizing a high-framerate experience for current-generation hardware. The massive reduction in storage overhead provided by the Rixel technology gives the studio room to expand the game rapidly.

The developers can implement new biomes, creatures, and materials over the coming months without hitting strict memory ceilings. Players looking to test the new Title Update 8 can access the build for free through the Xbox Insider Hub.

The playtest is currently running strictly on the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles, utilizing the hardware’s architecture to handle the rapid world generation and advanced voxel sculpting tools.
