Less than a week ago, the popular tactical realistic first-person shooter Ready or Not from 2021 finally launched on consoles. In just a few days, the game surpassed one million sales on consoles—despite having faced heavy review bombing just weeks prior.

The review bombing occurred earlier on Steam after a censorship update was announced. This update was necessary for the game to be released on consoles. For simplicity and cost reasons, the developers chose to have identical versions for PC and consoles. Now that the update has been released on PC, it turns out not to be that bad—though still a bit disappointing. Nevertheless, the console release was not affected, and within just a few days, the game reached over one million units sold on PlayStation and Xbox.
Community reviews and feedback for Ready or Not remain very positive, apart from the censorship issue. With the addition of new crossplay features, friends on different consoles can now play together. Steam player numbers have also continued to grow, which speaks volumes about the game’s popularity.
The Journey from Early Access to Console Hit
The tactical shooter Ready or Not entered Early Access on Steam on December 17, 2021. Developed by Void Interactive, it was hailed as a spiritual successor to SWAT 4. The game focuses on realistic police operations, with players taking on the role of a SWAT commander. Initially, the game emphasized tension, realism, and teamwork with life-or-death decisions—no run-and-gun here, but slow, tactical gameplay.

Even during Early Access, the game became a hidden gem in the tactical shooter scene, especially popular among streamers and YouTubers. Its extensive modding support further strengthened community engagement. The developers worked closely with players through community feedback sessions to continuously improve the gameplay.
Over time, new maps and weapons were added. The 1.0 release followed on December 13, 2023. Developers steadily improved AI behavior, audio design, visual effects, weapon physics, and overall performance. The story campaign and various mission scenarios were also expanded.
On June 18, 2025, Ready or Not launched on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. There were no last-gen versions (PS4/Xbox One), as the game is too technically demanding. Console version features include:
- 4K resolution and stable 60 FPS
- All PC content, including single-player and co-op mode
- Controller optimization with command wheels for team orders
- Customizable HUD elements and audio settings
Ready or Not: Plans for the Future
Following the successful console release, VOID Interactive plans to continue supporting the game with both free and paid content. Players can expect new weapons and missions as well as ongoing optimizations. The console versions will remain mod-free. Future updates will continue to be heavily influenced by community feedback.
