In just a few days, on April 8, 2026, Pokémon Champions will launch as a new PvP focused Pokémon game. Champions will release first on Switch and is planned to come to mobile later. The game focuses on competitive battles instead of story, similar to Pokémon Stadium. It will be free to play, but monetization will be a major part, with a Battle Pass and a subscription already sparking discussions before release. So what exactly are the Battle Pass and membership, and is it really that bad?
Battle Pass in Pokémon Champions – Rewards and Monetization
Pokémon Champions will feature a classic Battle Pass with a progression system. You earn progress through battles and Season Points. Alongside the paid Premium Battle Pass for around €6.99, there will also be a free version. The Premium Pass offers extra rewards and exclusive items. Content in the pass will include items, cosmetics, Mega Stones, and icons. Each season is expected to bring a new pass, similar to other live service games like Pokémon Go.
Subscription Model and Extra Purchases – How far does Pokémon go?
In addition to the Battle Pass, a monthly membership is planned. No exact price has been confirmed yet, but it is expected to cost around €4 per month, or about €50 per year. The currently known benefits include:
- More Pokémon storage
- More team slots
- Exclusive missions and content
- Additional bonuses such as battle songs
There is also a €9.99 Starter Pack that gives extra storage and items. However, all of these bonuses can also be earned for free through Victory Points. This means the monetization mainly speeds up progression, but free to play players can still reach the same level over time. This is similar to most free to play mobile games, such as Pokémon Go or Clash Royale. Still, players are already debating possible pay to win elements, as these will likely be more noticeable in the first few days. Over time, however, this effect should become less obvious.
