The Endless franchise began in 2012 with Endless Space. Since then, it has spawned multiple 4X games, roguelikes, and spin-offs. All the titles discussed today belong to the so-called Endless Universe. The games transition between galaxies, planets, and space stations, occasionally separated by millennia in their timelines. Nevertheless, they remain interconnected through shared elements. At the core is a vanished civilization known as the Endless. They once ruled vast portions of the galaxy, but only ruins, technologies, and artifacts remain of their existence.

The most crucial remnant of the Endless is the substance known as Dust. Dust is utilized as both a currency and an energy source. There are also various distinct species that appear across multiple games. However, each title adopts a different genre or setting. Endless Space focuses on galactic empires, while Legend merges fantasy and science fiction. Dungeon of the Endless and Endless Dungeon rely on roguelite action. Furthermore, the universe was recently expanded in 2025 with Endless Legend 2. Today, we examine the entire franchise and all of its facets.
Endless Space Laid the Foundation for the Universe in 2012
The beginning of the franchise is marked by Endless Space, which was released on July 4, 2012. Endless Space was the first game developed by Amplitude Studios, presenting a turn-based 4X strategy experience. You lead a civilization across an entire galaxy, exploring star systems, colonizing planets, and researching technologies. Naturally, other factions exist with whom you can trade. Furthermore, you continuously expand your economy, engage in diplomacy with rival factions, and command your fleets in warfare.
The concept of the Endless was introduced in this very first title. The eponymous Endless were an ancient civilization that vanished long before the events of the game. However, their ruins are scattered throughout the galaxy, offering abandoned technologies that can significantly empower empires. The resource Dust also plays a critical role in the economy and for heroes. Heroes can support and strengthen fleets or star systems.
The game features various factions, each possessing distinct backgrounds and playstyles. A few examples include: The United Empire represents an expanding human domain. The Sophons focus entirely on research. Cravers are driven to exploit and conquer other worlds. Horatio seeks to populate the galaxy with clones of himself. Amoeba favor exploration and diplomacy. Each faction conveys its own narrative. Over time, the game received expansions such as Disharmony, which enhanced combat systems and units. Players were even able to vote on ideas and content that were subsequently integrated into the game. This principle later became a hallmark of Amplitude: maintaining a close connection with the player base. Endless Space not only established the world but also set the design philosophy for the entire series.
Dungeon of the Endless Turned 4X into a Roguelike
The third installment in the franchise was Dungeon of the Endless, released in October 2014. Yes, the third game—we will return to the second in the following section. This title marked a sharp departure from the 4X genre, presenting a scaled-down dungeon adventure. The game offers a blend of roguelike mechanics, tower defense, and resource management. You find yourself on a prison spacecraft named Success, which is shot down and crashes on the planet Auriga. Some of the survivors land in a massive underground facility, partially constructed by the ancient Endless. Your primary objective is to protect an energy crystal.
Naturally, you must also explore the station, and behind every opened door, you uncover new rooms or enemies. The rooms are generated procedurally, and some even require Dust to be activated. Within these rooms, alongside monsters, various resources can be discovered. Industry is required to build defense towers for the energy crystal. Science unlocks new technologies. Food heals heroes and allows for new recruitment. Every hero possesses unique stats and abilities. Certain characters from this game even reappear in other Endless titles.
If one of your heroes dies, the loss is permanent. At the end of each level, the crystal must be transported to the exit. During this process, massive waves of monsters attack, forcing you to mount a staunch defense. You must constantly balance the risks of exploration against the need for security. The game features pixel art graphics that starkly contrast with the visual style of the 4X titles. The soundtrack, just as in Endless Space, was composed by Arnaud Roy, also known as FlyByNo. With this roguelike, the Endless Universe demonstrated that it is not confined to a single genre, proving that smaller characters and isolated rooms can convey the same deep lore as entire galaxies. The Deep Freeze and Rescue Team expansions introduced additional heroes and content. This game subsequently served as the foundation for Endless Dungeon. Furthermore, the storyline establishes a direct connection to the planet Auriga, which becomes highly relevant in Endless Legend.
Endless Legend Transformed Auriga into a Dying Fantasy World
Endless Legend was the second game in the franchise, releasing one month prior to Dungeon of the Endless in September 2014. The narrative unfolds on the previously mentioned planet Auriga, and it is a turn-based fantasy 4X game. However, beneath this fantasy veneer, a core of science fiction persists. Magic exists, often derived from Dust or ancient technology. Numerous Endless ruins are scattered across the planet. Yet, Auriga is threatened by increasingly prolonged winters. Now, every faction must seek its own path to survival.
The world map is divided into fixed regions, and only one major city can be established per region. Cities expand directly across the hex grid through the addition of new districts. Minor factions reside in villages; you can engage them in combat or pacify them through quests. The faction quests grant each civilization its own narrative arc and alter the fundamental rules of the game. Below, you will learn about several of the distinct playable factions and what makes them unique.
The Wild Walkers rely on formidable industrial capabilities. The Broken Lords do not require food; instead, their population is sustained and created using Dust. The Necrophages expand through warfare and the consumption of their adversaries. The Roving Clans focus heavily on commerce and utilize mobile cities. The Cultists are restricted to controlling only a single true city. The Vaulters leverage advanced technologies and teleportation portals, providing a vital thematic link to the space-faring titles. Lastly, the Drakken excel in diplomacy. Subsequent expansions introduced even more playable factions focused on espionage, winter mechanics, or naval supremacy. Over time, the game received numerous expansions, the last of which was released in 2021. Consequently, Auriga evolved into the most significant individual setting within the franchise. This title profoundly illustrated how seamlessly fantasy and science fiction are integrated within the Endless Universe.
Endless Space 2 Turned the Franchise into a Grand Space Opera
Endless Space 2 was released on May 18, 2017. This entry marks a return to galactic, turn-based 4X strategy. However, the focus in Endless Space 2 is placed much more heavily on presentation and narrative. Each faction features extensive questlines, and every decision you make can alter the faction’s development. You can also enact laws in the game that directly influence your economy, research, or military capabilities. Furthermore, your population consists of various species, each with its own specific needs and bonuses, which makes managing internal politics significantly more important.
Star systems contain several distinct planets that must be suitable for your population. Later in the game, you can utilize terraforming to alter a planet’s characteristics, allowing your species to thrive there. Space battles are heavily influenced by fleet formations and tactical cards. The combat itself still unfolds automatically, but there are heroes available who can take command of fleets and provide powerful enhancements.
Many familiar factions from previous titles make a return, though almost all of them have undergone significant changes. The United Empire can develop politically in various directions. The Sophons rely heavily on research once again, while the Cravers are compelled to continue their permanent expansion. Horatio still seeks to create the perfect galaxy populated entirely by Horatios. Additionally, many new factions have been introduced, such as the Unfallen, a living, plant-like civilization. The Vodyani live aboard massive ark ships, the Riftborn originate from an entirely different dimension, and there are many more to discover.
Over time, several expansions were released, reintroducing factions like the Vaulters. The Supremacy expansion brought the Hissho and massive Behemoth ships into the game. Subsequent expansions introduced hacking mechanics, the Umbral Choir, the Nakalim, the Academy, and much more. While not every expansion was universally praised by the community, Endless Space 2 is widely regarded as the most narratively compelling space entry in the series. The soundtrack and illustrations give each faction a distinct identity. In 2019, the free spin-off “Love Thyself – A Horatio Story” was released. This visual novel tells a humorous tale about Horatio clones, showing that the franchise was even willing to experiment with a pure narrative game.
Endless Dungeon Brought the Roguelite into the Third Dimension
Endless Dungeon is the spiritual successor to 2014’s Dungeon of the Endless, released in 2023. Rather than a direct remake, this is an entirely new experience. Endless Dungeon shifts away from pixel art in favor of a fully three-dimensional presentation. In terms of gameplay, it blends roguelite mechanics, twin-stick action, and tower defense. The game takes place on an abandoned space station, where survivors are attempting to reach the station’s core. During each run, you must protect a small crystal robot. If the robot is destroyed, the run ends immediately.
The rooms and the hazards within them change with every run. You directly control a hero, requiring you to shoot, dodge, and use abilities in real time. In addition, you can build defensive turrets to help fend off waves of monsters. You must carefully balance your resources between research and defense. Endless Dungeon can be played solo or in co-op mode with up to four players. The different heroes you can choose from possess unique weapons and specialized roles. Between runs, everyone gathers in a saloon, where new storylines and character relationships are gradually unlocked.
The game carries over many core ideas from its predecessor, but direct action plays a much larger role here. As a result, the tower defense elements and strategic planning occasionally take a back seat. The new visual style leans heavily into a comic book aesthetic crossed with a sci-fi Western theme. The game also features significantly higher production values, both technically and mechanically. However, some players have criticized its repetitive nature or felt a lack of long-term motivation. The Definitive Edition bundles the base game together with all additional content.
Endless Legend 2 Will Decide the Future of the Franchise
The newest game in the franchise to date is Endless Legend 2, which entered Early Access on September 22, 2025. The game takes you to a new planet called Saiadha, continuing the series’ signature blend of fantasy and science fiction. Saiadha is a doomed ocean world, introducing a major new mechanic known as the Tidefalls. This means that the sea level drops during a match, exposing new territories. As a result, new land routes and resources are continuously revealed, forcing a constant shift in strategic positioning.
Exploration remains crucial in Endless Legend 2 for much longer than in traditional 4X games. The factions once again feature highly asymmetrical mechanics. The Necrophages return from the first Endless Legend, while the Last Lords are highly reminiscent of the Broken Lords. The Aspects build living coral structures, the Kin of Sheredyn focus heavily on their heroes, and the Tahuks merge animal herds with a nomadic culture. Faction quests and narrative events remain central to the gameplay experience. Combat has also been redesigned to be more direct and tactical. You can construct specialized districts within your cities to ensure steady growth, and both diplomacy and political influence mechanics have been significantly expanded.
Endless Legend 2 is currently still in Early Access, with Amplitude relying heavily on community feedback. The developers have already overhauled the AI, game balance, faction quests, and user interfaces. In June 2026, the Retold Tales update was released, which, among other things, revamped the dialogue system. Further illustrations and improvements are currently in the works. A firm release date for Version 1.0 has not yet been established, but the full version is expected to feature at least one additional playable faction. The endgame, user interface, and overall balance will also see further development. The developers aim to make the game more accessible and technically modern without losing the creative spark of its predecessor. The success of this title will likely determine the future of all Endless projects, potentially paving the way for an Endless Space 3 or another entirely new genre experiment.
Conclusion – The Endless Universe is Larger Than Any Single Game
The Endless Universe extends far beyond just Endless Space or Endless Legend. Since 2012, Amplitude Studios has continuously presented its universe from new perspectives. Sometimes you manage entire star systems, sometimes you fight for survival on a dying fantasy planet, and sometimes you defend a small crystal from waves of monsters. Nevertheless, through the presence of Dust, the ruins of the Endless, and recurring civilizations, all these games undeniably feel like part of the same cohesive world.
What makes the franchise particularly fascinating is that it has never limited itself to a single genre. While the grand 4X games remain the heart of the series, titles like Dungeon of the Endless, Endless Dungeon, and even the small visual novel Love Thyself demonstrate just how flexible this universe truly is. Not every experiment resonates equally with every player, but it is precisely this variety that sets the Endless series apart from many other strategy franchises.
With Endless Legend 2, the next chapter is currently unfolding. The game must preserve the creative factions and unique atmosphere of its predecessor while simultaneously modernizing its technical foundation and gameplay loop. Whether this will be followed by Endless Space 3, another roguelite, or a completely new experiment remains to be seen. However, the Endless Universe clearly holds enough worlds, stories, and concepts to support many more games. Its greatest strength lies not in one single title, but in the freedom to continuously create something new from the same captivating universe.
