Payday 3 is out and the launch has gone so bad that the devs have hinted it could get an offline mode after all.

The heist game is finally now out on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, but players hate the always-online multiplayer that the devs are thinking of adding an offline mode.
Payday 3 is a massively popular first-person heist-shooter from Starbreeze Studios and Overkill Software. However, the devs’ decision to make it online-only has caused server issues such as persistent lag and disconnects. This has made it difficult for players to join or complete jobs.
Multiple online issues have seen the game sit on “Mostly Negative” on Steam. After its first few days it has more than 22,000 negative reviews compared to just 10,000 positive reviews.
The matchmaking problems have seen Starbreeze CEO Tobias Sjögren release a statement via their website. It says, “Payday 3 matchmaking infrastructure has not performed as tested and expected. Matchmaking software encountered an unforeseen error, which made it unable to handle the massive influx of players. The issue caused an unrecoverable situation for Starbreeze’s third-party matchmaking partner.”
There is no yes or no regarding whether Starbreeze will implement an offline option for Payday 3. However, in the same statement, the company says, “In the short-term, this means Starbreeze’s focus is to ensure the player experience. In the long-term, this means evaluating a new partner for matchmaking services and making Payday 3 less dependent on online services.”
We may not have an exact answer, but Tobias Sjögren said on Twitter, now X, that those wishing to try the game should check it out on Xbox Game Pass. He said, “jokes aside,” the team is “looking at the possibility to add some sort of offline mode.”
