Pocket Pair’s “Pokémon With Guns,” better known as Palworld, continues to be surrounded by controversy after its very successful release on January 19, which has seen the game become the second most-played game ever on Steam. The latest rumors hint at the developers using AI and ripping off Nintendo’s Pokémon. But is it true?
Let’s get one thing clear. AI is here, and it’s here to stay. We all use it or will use it in some capacity in the next couple of years. Gaming is no different. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 announced last year they were going to be the first to implement real-time AI-powered voice chat moderation, and there are even Skyrim mods that utilize ChatGPT to deliver unique, and sometimes hilarious, NPC chat behavior.
Every game uses AI to some degree, but it gets murky when talking about AI-generated images as there have been recent cases, and arguments put forward that show AI-generated image tools and apps use copyrighted material to create work. This has seen sites like gettyimages sue AI art generators for copyright infringement.
It’s because of reasons like that that Valve no doubt took the stance of not allowing video games that utilized AI-generated images on the Steam platform. Recently, however, Steam relaxed that stance with a blog post outlining that games must implement fail-safes that prevent pre-generated and live-generated AI content from distributing copyrighted or illegal content.
It’s not the first time Valve has blocked new and experimental features that could threaten Steam. They were famously caught up in the NFT conversation when they were the first to come out and outright block video games that used blockchain or cryptocurrency from Steam.
So then, what about Palworld? At the moment, there is no hard evidence of Palworld using AI-generated art to create their Pals. But, there are few points that people like to bring up. For instance, in 2021, Pocket Pair CEO Takuro Mizobe spoke of his fascination with the idea of AI and using it as an experiment to create AI-generated Pokémon.

If that doesn’t strike your interest enough, how about the fact that in 2022, the company made an AI drawing game called AI: Art Imposter – which is available on Steam.
So then, what about Palworld? At the moment, there is no hard evidence of Palworld using AI-generated art to create their Pals. But, there are few points that people like to bring up. As circumstantial evidence goes, it looks pretty bad for Palworld and Pocket Pair, but again, so far there is no evidence of any wrongdoing in Palworld whether its AI-generated content or copyright infringement on Pokémon. And right now, we have to take Mizobe’s word for it when he posted on X, “all productions related to Palworld are supervised by multiple people, including myself, and I am responsible for the production.”
At the moment, it’s all good news for Palworld which doesn’t seem to be breaking any Steam AI rules or any laws as it goes on to break record after record. Whatever is in store for the game in the future we will have to wait to see, but right now, if you’re not playing it, it would seem you’re missing out!
