Ninja Theory’s future has become even more uncertain as layoffs have reportedly started at the studio. The Hellblade developer was already facing a proposed closure after two separate agreements to sell the studio fell through in September. Now, with employees confirming departures and redundancies, the situation is getting clearer and it’s not on the bright side.
Behind the Job Cuts at Ninja Theory
During the last week of September, another major reshuffle took place across Microsoft alongside more than 250 job cuts. At the time, the fate of several Xbox studios were decided including Halo Studios, Obsidian, Playground Games, and Turn 10, leaving just 2 more studios in limbo.
Arkane’s negotiations look set to drag through the rest of the year but Ninja Theory ran out of room after two separate acquisition agreements fell through. Those failed talks triggered formal consultations regarding a proposed closure of the studio.
Now as October begins, layoffs have started at Ninja Theory. Microsoft and Ninja Theory have not officially announced the layoffs but multiple employees have confirmed that they have been affected and are now looking for new opportunities. Among them are technical director Loong-Wei Ding, senior technical artist Matt Le-Fevre, principal sound designer Daniele Galante, marketing and social lead Will Potter, and gameplay programmer Katrin Mair.
More employees have reportedly been affected, although the exact number of layoffs remains unknown. The roles involved also span several areas of development and seniority, from technical and gameplay positions to audio and marketing.
Since Microsoft has not pulled the plug on Ninja theory just yet, this won’t be the last layoff update we’ll hear from the studio. But while this is obviously bad news, it could be their bid to avoid full closure. And with that, maybe a future for Senua which was apparently Microsoft’s leverage to find an outside buyer for the team.
