NieR: Automata 9th Anniversary: Why the Producer Issued a Warning
Square Enix is already looking ahead to 2026. While the publisher stacks its calendar with heavy hitters like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy, a quiet update regardingregarding NieR: Automata has surfaced.
Producer Yosuke Saito recently dropped a hint about the acclaimed action RPG’s upcoming milestone. The game turns nine next year, and the team apparently has plans. However, Saito also issued a specific warning to the fanbase.
The 9th Anniversary Tease
NieR: Automata originally launched in Japan on February 23, 2017. It redefined the action-RPG genre and cemented Yoko Taro’s status as a cult icon.
In a recent interview with Japanese outlet 4Gamer, Saito discussed his ambitions for 2026. He confirmed that the team hasn’t forgotten the milestone.
“For the ninth anniversary of NieR: Automata, we are also preparing a little something,” Saito revealed.
He did not elaborate on what this content entails. It could range from a merchandise drop to a new media adaptation, or perhaps a minor in-game update.

NieR 3 Hype vs. Reality
Naturally, the mention of “new content” immediately sparked speculation about NieR 3. Fans have been desperate for a sequel confirmation for years.
Saito was quick to temper these expectations. He knows how passionate the community is and wanted to avoid a backlash from over-hyping a minor event.
“Please, do not get too excited,” Saito emphasized immediately after the tease.
This suggests the “surprise” is likely a celebration of the existing title rather than a reveal of a full sequel. Square Enix currently has massive resources tied up in Kingdom Hearts 4 and the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, leaving little room for another AAA production announcement right now.
Yoko Taro’s Current Status
This anniversary comes at an interesting time for series creator Yoko Taro. The eccentric director recently admitted to facing several successive failures with his latest projects.
A successful celebration for Automata could be the morale boost needed. Even if a third mainline game isn’t imminent, keeping the IP active is crucial for the franchise’s long-term health.
