Now, the silence is breaking—and it is bringing some serious baggage. The developers at 4A Games confirmed development of a new mainline title back in 2020.

They promised a heavy, narrative-driven single-player experience. Recently, the studio admitted the ongoing war in Ukraine has heavily influenced the tone of the upcoming game. You can expect a much darker, bleaker storyline this time around.


What Was in the 120GB Canned Metro 4 Leak?

The 120 GB leak contained a fully playable, canceled 2022 build of Metro 4 set between January 2033 and December 2034.

It featured a fully open-world structure and a detailed crafting system with alternative ammo types. Interestingly, it centered on the fan-favorite character Hunter rather than Artyom.

According to what was initially shared on Reddit, data miners dug through more than 20 zipped files containing maps, character models, and massive amounts of dialogue. Classic characters like Khan and Bourbon were featured prominently.

The scrapped game heavily focused on survival mechanics. You had an upgradeable NBC suit and a unique rumor system where players could investigate or disprove wasteland myths.

This build was ultimately scrapped by 4A Games four years ago. The current iteration of the upcoming sequel is expected to look entirely different.

The new Metro game is expected to be officially announced the week of April 13, 2026.

Reliable industry insider NateTheHate publicly corroborated this timeline. Multiple sources point to a reveal during a rumored, third-party focused PlayStation State of Play on April 16.
