Streetball is making a return to its roots this summer. After a few years of development and a high-profile rebranding, Play by Play Studios is finally ready to show what happens when the NBA meets the pavement. Between a veteran development team and a fresh approach to arcade sports, there is plenty to look at before NBA THE RUN officially arrives next month including a chance to play it as early as next week.

NBA THE RUN Release Date Announced

NBA THE RUN is a 3v3 online multiplayer experience designed to capture the specific energy of global streetball. The project was originally revealed in July 2024 under the title The Run: Got Next featuring a roster of fictional players. However, after the NBA saw what the team was building, they reached out to collaborate. By 2025, a partnership with the NBA and NBPA was made official leading to the licensed title we see today.

The studio behind the game, Play by Play Studios, is composed of former EA Sports developers including veterans who worked on the original NBA Street and FIFA Street franchises.

The game features 3v3 online multiplayer matches across several global streetball courts that spans from Venice Beach all the way to The Tenement in the Philippines. Its main mode is the Run the World Tournament which is a four-round knockout bracket where players compete to climb ranks and unlock rewards.

There are currently 32 NBA stars included in the game but Play by Play Studios says the roster was designed more like unique characters rather than just uniform player models. Alongside NBA athletes, players can also unlock streetball legends like Spin Cycle through Profile Rank progression.

For fans of NBA Street, this is the kind of game many have been waiting for for years, especially since NBA 2K’s Neighborhood mode never really filled that arcade-style streetball gap for a lot of players.

Thankfully, the release is not too far away anymore. Play by Play Studios has officially announced that NBA THE RUN launches on June 9, 2026 for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.

The game will be available in two editions. The Standard Edition is priced at $29.99, while the Deluxe Edition costs $39.99 which honestly feels pretty fair compared to where game pricing has gone lately.

Players who pick up the Deluxe Edition will receive Stephen Curry’s Golden State Warriors ‘09 Rookie Variant, Luka Dončić’s Dallas Mavericks ‘18 Rookie Variant, Kevin Durant’s Seattle Supersonics ‘07 Rookie Variant, along with 1000 CRED. CRED serves as the game’s in-game currency which can be earned through gameplay progression and not purchased with real money.

The in-game shop is also tied directly to Profile Rank. Certain cosmetics and rewards only appear once players reach specific ranks. Winning matches in style and performing well consistently will help players rank up faster and unlock the more sought-after items.

NBA THE RUN Second Closed Beta Starts Next Week

While June 9 is close, some players will be able to try NBA THE RUN much earlier. The studio announced that the game’s second Closed Beta Playtest will begin on May 19 and run from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM PT / 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM ET / 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM GMT.

For players who participated in the first beta, this upcoming test will new studd include several gameplay updates along with a new mode called Knockout Solos. The mode allows players to control the entire team during matches instead of focusing on just one player, offering a different pace and style compared to the game’s usual setup.

Players interested in joining the second closed beta can sign up through the game’s official website using either a Discord account or a Steam account. For now, the playtest will only be available on PC.
