A recent non-VR port couldn’t save Moss developer Polyarc from closure

Moss developer Polyarc is shutting down after nearly 12 years, despite a recent attempt to expand beyond VR with Moss The Forgotten Relic.

The video game industry has claimed another casualty as yet another VR studio has succumbed to the current fickle nature of the market. This time it is Polyarc, a developer that has been a steady presence in the space for nearly twelve years. The sudden news serves as a stark reminder of the financial struggles currently facing many studios.

Polyarc Games Is Shutting Down

Polyarc has been one of the favorite studios in the VR space pretty much since the modern VR market opened up. The Seattle-based developer made its name with Moss, the 2018 VR adventure starring the tiny mouse Quill which first launched on Playstation VR before eventually making its way to Oculus Quest as one of the platform’s launch titles. The game was extremely well received and quickly became one of the titles people pointed to when talking about what VR games could actually be.

That success led to Moss: Book II which expanded on the original while bringing Polyarc’s work to even more VR platforms including SteamVR. Once again, the studio delivered a game that was widely praised, further establishing Polyarc as one of the standout developers in the medium. The studio also had Glassbreakers: Champions of Moss under its belt, a multiplayer title that launched on Apple Vision Pro.

There was also an attempt to break beyond VR with Moss: The Forgotten Relic which released just a few months ago. The game brought together the stories of Moss and Moss: Book II into a non-VR adventure on PC, Playstation 5, Xbox consoles, and Nintendo Switch consoles. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to keep the studio going.

Polyarc announced the closure through its official LinkedIn page, saying farewell to the team and the fans while also trying to help its employees find new opportunities elsewhere. The studio shared a spreadsheet featuring at least 29 staff members with their job titles and portfolio information so potential employers could connect with them.

Sadly, it probably won’t be the last studio we see meet this fate, even before 2026 is over. For a company that spent nearly 12 years making some of VR’s most memorable games, this is a rough way for the story to end.
