The Mass Effect Legendary Edition launched May 14, 2021, and contains all DLC for the original trilogy, including promotional weapons, armors, and packs.

The games feature remastered visuals to support 4K Ultra HD graphics and improve frame rates, controls, weapon balance, and AI behavior.

The Mass Effect trilogy won endless praise and rewards when it was released, and here we have a few of the early reviews that reflect on the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Game Informer’s Kimberley Wallace praised the lasting impression that Shepard leaves on you, saying, “Even all these years later, Commander Shepard is a powerful force that lives up to their iconic status, and the trilogy is still captivating and worth your time.”

Steve Wright, of Stevivor compliments the “spectacular story and characters” but also acknowledges that the games are a little “dated.” He writes, “Should you play Mass Effect Legendary Edition? Of course you should. This is BioWare firing — for the most part — on all cylinders and hopefully is the dawn of a new resurgence of the franchise.

The biggest complaint that the reviewers have had is that the games can feel a little dated, noting that the updated visuals do not fix everything.

For RPGFan, Quinton O’Connor gave the games a glowing review but did say that the updated graphics show the failings of the cinematics. “I found myself blinking and double-taking at the disparity between current-gen character models and dead-eyed stares.”

So, there we are, a few of the early reviews we have so far and on the whole they have been very positive.

Perhaps Nick Petrasiti of The Sixth Axis says it best when he writes, “While it’s still a bit rough in some areas, and there’s quirks to how they’ve retrofitted some elements into the older game, it feels like a definitive version of the game you remember.”
