Konami Earns Billions in Its Best Year Yet

Konami has reported its best financial year so far, earning billions thanks to video games and more.

Konami’s latest financial year, which ran from April 2021 to March 2022, is it’s best one yet, according to the company’s financial report.

During the entire period, the company reported the following figures:

  • Actual revenue:  ¥299.5 billion (US$2.3 billion) | 9.9% increase from last year
  • Business Profit: ¥80.3 billion (US$626 million) | 25.2% increase from last year
  • Operating Profit: ¥74.4 billion (US$580.1 million) | 103.6% increase from last year
  Why did Konami stop making games?  

Majority of its revenue came from its Digital Entertainment Business Segment, which is where video games fall under. This segment actually earned  ¥215 billion (US$1.7 billion), which is a 5.3% increase from the previous year.

Among the games that made this possible is the free-to-play collectible card game Yu-Gi-Oh Master Duel. It launched in January 2022 as a cross-platform title, and has exceeded 30 million downloads as of April 2022.

Another game that contributed to this success is the Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME which has continually been gaining global support even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Other contributors include eSports initiatives (eNippon Series for the eBASEBALL Prospi A League 2021 season with Nippon Professional Baseball Organization) and collaborations with baseball franchises Professional Baseball Spirits and PAWAFURU PUROYAKYU.

It is also worth mentioning that Konami is a huge name in Asia, and its pachinko machines also proved just how popular it is with a generated revenue of ¥25.6 billion (US$199.7 million).

They also  started selling NFTs in the form of content that gamers collect as art.

At this time, Konami is confident they can continue the upward trend towards the end of the current financial year. Gamers are also looking forward to them releasing a new Silent Hill or Metal Gear game, although these were merely rumors.
