Judas: Former BioShock Infinite Director Ken Levine Says Upcoming FPS Is Very Old School

Judas: Former BioShock Infinite Director Ken Levine Says Upcoming FPS Is Very Old School

Judas is the debut title from Ken Levine’s studio, Ghost Story Games, formerly Irrational Games, the developer of the BioShock series.

In a recent interview with Nightdive Studios’ Lawrence Sonntag, Levine spoke about his vision for the upcoming FPS and his desire to deliver players a “whole” game at launch.

Ken Levine’s Return to the FPS Genre

Levine’s influence across the sci-fi FPS genre stretches back decades, with his work as director and writer on the original System Shock 2 in 1999 setting the tone for the BioShock series, which he created and worked as creative lead on through the first game to BioShock Infinite.

Now, more than a decade after Infinite, Levine wants to  use his experience in the industry and his love for classic game development to ensure his new game, Judas, is “old school,” one that, when people buy it, they get “the whole thing.”

What Does “Old-School” Mean for Judas?

In his interview with Sonntag, highlighted by GamesRadar, Levine describes his idea of old school being a game where “there’s no online component, there’s no live service, because everything we do is in service of telling the story and transporting the player.”

While he says he does not want to criticise developers for wanting to make ambitious and expensive titles that try to earn money through various tactics, he points to Baldur’s Gate 3 and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 as “traditional single-player games” that focus on story and quality rather than post-launch monetization. You can catch his thoughts in the video below at the 37:35 mark.

A Modern FPS with Retro DNA

Levine and his rebranded Ghost Story Games have decades worth of experience delivering narrative-driven single-player first-person shooters, and he seems keen to ensure the upcoming Judas blends that nostalgic game design with current-gen gameplay and visuals.

With no release date set for the FPS, it will be interesting to see how Levine implements his vision without compromising quality. Until then, check out the latest deals on some of our favorite games on our store pages.
