In a recent survey by the Game Developers Conference (GDC), video game developers and professionals were asked if they wanted non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in their games.
Blockchain technology, cryptocurrency, and NFTs are all the talk in the video game world at the moment, with gamers around the globe split on whether they benefit games.
Some companies such as Konami, Ubisoft, Epic Games, Square Enix, and SEGA have all expressed their interest in adding NFTs in future projects.
In fact, Ubisoft has created Ubisoft Quartz, a new platform for purchasing and trading NFTs within Ubisoft games like Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint.
More recently, GSC Game World, developer of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, decided to remove NFTs from the upcoming S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl after intense backlash from fans.
With gamers unsure about blockchain technology, how do the developers feel using it in their games?
Well, according to GDC, 70% stated they did not wish to include NFTs in their games, with only 7% being very interested.
The above chart by Statista shows the breakdown of more than 2,700 game developers.
One anonymous developer stated, “It feels completely fueled by greed for more money because we read stories about crypto millionaires when in reality everything is extremely unstable and unethical.”
One of the biggest problems with adding cryptocurrency to a game is that it can promote scams and controversy, severely impacting a game and developer’s reputation.
It also brings up a lot of legal questions, which is just one of the many reasons that forced Valve to ban games that use blockchain technology from Steam.
So, for now, NFTs may not be in your favorite video game, but with more and more companies embracing the technology, it may not be long until we see it everywhere.
