Recent layoffs by Microsoft have seen 136 team members leave id Software, leaving fans in doubt whether the studio can still handle the DOOM franchise and its id Tech game engine, something the studio says it can and will continue to do so.

- id Software states it retains the necessary personnel to continue development of DOOM: The Dark Ages and maintain the id Tech engine despite recent layoffs.
- The studio has adopted a leaner operational model, noting that its current headcount is similar to the size of the team that produced the 2016 DOOM reboot.
- Despite the reduction in staff, the developer has publicly confirmed that internal production for its upcoming projects will continue as planned.
Earlier this month, Microsoft laid off 3,200 staff, with 1,600 cut from its Xbox division across multiple studios. One of those affected was id Software, the developer of DOOM: The Dark Ages, which lost 136 people, over half of its staff.
While fans are worrying what that could mean for the studio and the DOOM franchise, the developer released a statement on X, stating: We still have the crew we need to build the games and tech we’re known for,” while also pointing out it is now about the same size as the team was when it made DOOM (2016).

What Does the id Software Layoff Mean for DOOM: The Dark Ages?
The recent restructuring has resulted in the departure of 136 employees from id Software, over half of its team at the studio.
Despite this significant reduction, the company has indicated that internal production of DOOM: The Dark Ages and ongoing maintenance of the id Tech engine will continue.
How Does id Software’s Current Size Compare to the DOOM 2016 Era?
Current staffing levels at id Software have been brought back to a scale similar to the headcount maintained during the production of 2016’s DOOM.
This is a move toward a flatter, more concentrated studio philosophy, moving away from the expanded rosters that characterized the studio’s operations during the development of recent titles like DOOM Eternal.
Will id Software Remain a PC Gaming Powerhouse?
id Software continues to be a central pillar of the first-person shooter genre due to the proprietary nature of their id Tech engine.
While the studio’s capacity for large-scale, multi-project development has been constrained by recent headcount adjustments, its historical focus on engine-first design ensures its core technology remains a critical asset for the PC and Xbox platforms.
