GTA 6: Rockstar Confirms “Zero” Generative AI in Development

While other developers, including Rockstar Games’ own parent company, Take-Two Interactive, explore AI’s potential, CEO Strauss Zelnick has delivered a categorical statement regarding Grand Theft Auto VI. Generative AI will play “zero part” in its creation.

Yet, in a bold move that redefines the very essence of game craftsmanship, Rockstar Games has declared that its highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI will have “zero ” generative AI.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Take-Two CEO Zelnick has said that while he has been “enthusiastic” about generative AI from the beginning, Rockstar’s upcoming GTA 6 is “handcrafted.”

GTA 6 vs The Procedural Future

Don’t get it mixed up, Take-Two isn’t anti-technology. Zelnick openly admits the company has “hundreds of pilots” for AI tools to handle the mundane stuff to speed up development and lower costs.

By dedicating human talent to the intricate details of world-building, character development, and narrative scripting, Rockstar is investing in the unique artistic vision that has consistently set the GTA series apart.

This isn’t about shunning innovation, but about discerning where technology enhances and where it might detract from the distinct magic of a Rockstar game. As Zelnick admits, Rockstar’s handcrafted worlds are what “differentiates” them from other studios.
