The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered was one of the great surprises this year. And when they confirmed that a physical edition was coming, all fans were over the moon. However, the excitement quickly turned to disappointment, even anger, as the physical disc didn’t exactly come as advertised.

Bethesda has found itself in rough waters after fans discovered that The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, which was advertised as including the base game on disc, doesn’t actually do so. Thanks to dedicated gamers determined to uncover the truth about physical releases, it’s now confirmed that the physical edition of Oblivion Remastered requires an internet connection to download the full game.

   

Reports reveal that the disc contains only 19.06GB of data which allows players to use the character creator and some parts of the beginning of the game. At some point, there will be a prompt to download the full game online before you can progress further. Upon inspection of the actual disc box, a notice of “Internet is Required” can be seen.

While this practice has become increasingly common in modern releases (but not very welcomed), fans felt misled since the official Elder Scrolls X account explicitly stated that the base game would be included on the disc.

Following the expose, some players have already cancelled their preorders. Many argue they would never have bought the physical edition had they known it didn’t include the full game, while even longtime fans expressed disappointment over what they perceive as false advertising. Because it is.

A few gamers have defended Bethesda, noting that the game’s massive file size which is over 100GB makes it difficult to fit on a single disc. Others counter that the company could have opted for a two-disc release, as seen with other major titles. Regardless of where players stand though, the main point is that they advertised the base game as included on the disc.

As of writing, Bethesda has yet to issue an official statement regarding the situation.
