BlockBlasters on Steam was exposed as malware after draining $30,000 from a cancer-stricken streamer before removal

Steam Game BlockBlasters Contains Malware

Another game on Steam has been found to contain malware. Unlike some which were uncovered quite quickly, BlockBlasters by Genesis Interactive was released on July 30, and started spreading its malicious code after an August 30 patch update. Thankfully, but unfortunately also, this was exposed inadvertently by a streamer who lost $30,000 on air that was meant for his cancer treatment.

Now-deleted Game ‘BlockBlasters; on Steam Contained Malware

In any industry, there will always be people with bad intentions who will relentlessly get the better of anyone. And with the move to digital products and online purchasing, ecommerce has been most vulnerable as ever. In the past few years, there have been dangerous malware disguised as video games, not only to steal personal information but also to steal hard-earned money. Most are reported which leaves one level of the actual realization of the fact for most.

However, a recent live stream by rastalandTV showed it first hand and the despair it brings to a person. And this is a particularly difficult thing to watch since he streams to earn money for his Stage-4 Sarcoma cancer treatment.

The game, now deleted, was listed as a free-to-play game on Steam. Basically someone contacted rastalandTV to play BlockBlasters in exchange for compensation. Considering the circumstances, as many would, he agreed.

Not before long, the game turned out to be a cryptodrainer and has stolen $30,000 from him. It was devastating to watch that it brought many to realize how much more vigilant we should be in things we download.

BlockBlasters was actually already reported a week ago by GDATA and was marked by SteamDB as suspicious. However, Steam wasn’t able to remove the game fast enough to prevent future damages. And now, here we are.

Steam has multiple gates in place to weed out potential malware products. But at the end of the day, it’s hard to completely screen every game posted and every patch released. These scammers aren’t your average devs. It’s just a matter of time for something to fall through the cracks.
