Football Manager 2018 will be shipping out with a brand new feature most people might not have expected — players will come out as gay. It’s a sensitive topic and one that usually rouses heated debates, but Sports Interactive wants it to be “seen as a positive thing.”

Talking to BBC Sport, Miles Jacobson, the game’s director, said that they decided to include the feature because there are gay footballers. “We know from the amount of professionals that there has to be players who are gay but feel they don’t want to come out.”

He also said that the it will be quite rare in the game and that in clubs belonging to countries where it is illegal to be gay it will never happen. Players who do come out will cause their club to see a slight increase in revenue implied to be coming from the support of an LGBT community.

Other new features previously confirmed are Dynamics, a new fantasy draft interface, and a new 3D match engine.

Football Manager 2018 is scheduled for release on 10 November for PC, Mac and Linux.
