Fable is one of the most awaited games next year, and Playground Games has now revealed roughly how long players can expect its main story to take. The news has sparked some discussion around whether the upcoming RPG is too short for a modern open-world game.
Fable’s Main Story Will Take Around 20 Hours
Fable, being one of the most awaited games next year, took centerstage at Gamescom when it released an 18-minute gameplay demo that showcased the game’s combat, some new enemies, and the return of the Befowl spell. It was a sizeable preview of the upcoming RPG which, as you can imagine, chased in a few preorders just with that demo.
There is a bit of a stir in the community, however, with the confirmation of how long the game is. During a group Q&A at Gamescom, associate game director Will Kennedy shared that the main quest will take around 15–20 hours to complete. There are then another 15–20 hours of side quests and open-world exploration, giving players around 30–40 hours of more structured content if they focus on the main and side quests.
While this is the case, the game can be played for much longer thanks to the game’s life-sim systems which includes buying properties and interacting with townspeople. Fable has always had plenty of activities outside of its main storyline and the new game seems to be the same.
Considering the past Fable games, the length does sound roughly at par. The series has never been known for having especially long main campaigns, and a 15–20 hour story would actually give the new Fable a longer central quest than some of its predecessors.
The reaction from the community has been fairly mixed, although it isn’t simply a case of everyone thinking Fable is too short. A lot of players are perfectly comfortable with a 15–20 hour main story, with some arguing that they would rather have a shorter game with focused content than an RPG stretched to 80 or 100 hours with repetitive activities.
