Epic Games Accuses Sony of Blocking Lower Game Prices
The lawsuit of Epic vs Google and Apple is still ongoing, one that started back in 2020. One that began as Epic’s golden goose Fortnite got removed from Android and iOS after Epic pushed an update that bypassed payment directly to them, instead of the usual 30% cut to the platform.
While the case with Apple mostly went into their favor, Google is facing other issues with an antitrust lawsuit, caused by the ability to sideload apps on Android devices. This stirred various rebukes during the trial, with Epic defending themselves when pointed at their own actions.
The Most Favored Nations clause between Epic and Sony
When questioned about the 30% price cut that Google receives from in-store and app purchase via Play Store, Google rebuked that Epic has to pay the same fee on console platforms, but seems fine with it. This caused Epic to defend themselves and blame Sony for their Most Favored Nations (MFN) clause, for being unable to offer lower prices.
The clause implies that Sony has the advantage, and set the prices not allowing users to go to other platforms to find better prices. It’s also noted that this clause is shady, as Sony has become shareholders of Epic Games, with well over 2 billion $.
The Android app problem
The problem regarding Android has to do with how Google ships almost every Android device with their own Play Store already installed. As Android has the ability to use alternative stores as well as usage of third party apps not obtained directly through Google’s store. Making the claims of Epic fiercer, not to mention open a whole can of worms with the Play Store being held against antitrust laws, being analyzed in a separate case.
While Epic Games claims are definitely not pure and backed up by the need to boost their margins year on year. It’s also undeniable that this could shake the monopoly on the Android market, as well as other closed ecosystems allowing users to have more choice. But not without major risks.
