Windows 11 Update: Is Your PC Powerful Enough for upcoming AI Features?

It seems there are changes on the horizon regarding the minimum requirements for Windows 11, Microsoft’s latest iteration of the operating system. Indeed, as mentioned by user Albacore (@thebookisclosed) on Twitter, certain system requirements seem to be necessary to take advantage of AI-enhanced features of the operating system.

Microsoft is banking on AI with Windows 11

It’s certainly not unknown to everyone that there is a race among the tech giants for the best AI-enhanced technology. And Microsoft is certainly not lagging behind on this front. If the first major step towards using AI was definitely taken with the Bing search engine, over the past few months Windows 11 has also been enriched with features that indeed make use of this revolutionary yet also criticized Artificial Intelligence.

User Albacore's tweet regarding Windows 11 AI requirements

User Albacore on Twitter delved deep into Insider Build 26200 of Windows 11 and noticed that this particular build contains a code that seems to display a watermark on the desktop for those who do not meet the minimum requirements to use the AI features of Windows 11. Among the features that make use of this technology, we recall Windows Copilot, Bing Chat, Paint Cocreator, and many others.

The new AI requirements for Windows 11

Apparently, the new minimum requirements to use these features would include:

  • 16 GB RAM
  • 225GB of Storage
  • ARM 64 Processor, namely the mentioned Snapdragon X Elite NPU (Found in the new Microsoft Surface)

And it seems to make use of these features for the new Advanced Copilot, which will function as File Explorer AI, with functionalities similar to those of Cortana. We still do not know if these requirements are only required for the new lineup of Microsoft Surface Laptops, or if Microsoft intends to expand the option to others in the industry, including AMD and Intel with their first offerings with hardware dedicated to AI. What is certain is that this also seems like another step by Microsoft to make Windows 11 compatible only with certain hardware, and to add another obstacle for those who might bypass the initial requirements through methods other than the classic installation via Media Creation Tool. We’ll see what the future holds, especially with the recent rumors regarding the cancellation or postponement of Windows 12.
