What are the most expensive games?

Key Facts

  • When selling games at auction, price can depend on rarity, condition, historical significance, and popularity.
  • If you’re hoping to sell a video game on auction, the higher prices are paid for games unopened.
  • A Super Mario Bros. game for the NES sold for $2,000,000 at auction in 2021.

MOST EXPENSIVE AND TIME WORTHY VIDEO GAMES

Before we get into the most expensive game sold at auction, it’s worth mentioning the games that are worth your time.

Capcom has just released the Resident Evil 4 remake, and it’s being hailed as one of the best remakes of a video game ever.

Sons of the Forest is the sequel to The Forest. Although it’s only in Early Access on Steam, the survival horror is worth playing, particularly with friends, and you can get hundreds of hours out of it easily.

Another survival horror, Project Zomboid, recently left Early Access, and its full release will keep you and your friends fighting for survival in the zombie apocalypse until death inevitably comes.

MOST VALUABLE GAMES SOLD AT AUCTION

How we value video games can vary depending on whether you put its worth in how much game time you get out of it, how much you buy it for at retail, and of course, how much you can get for selling it at auction.

what is the most valued video game?

Below are a few of our favorite games that not only sold well and brought a lot of money in at auction but also gave plenty of great gaming memories.

Super Mario Bros. (NES)

If you’re of a certain age, you can’t look past Super Mario Bros. on the Nintendo Entertainment System. Those of us old enough to play it all those years ago, when it was first released in 1985, have nothing but good memories when it comes to Nintendo’s platform game.

Nostalgia goes a long way in video games, and it helped it when a never-opened copy of Super Mario Bros. sold for $2,000,000 at auction in 2021.

The Legend of Zelda (NES)

Another favorite from the NES is The Legend of Zelda, an innovative action adventure that still inspires the genre today. Released in 1986, it was a critical and commercial success for Nintendo, and the series is still going strong, with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Dragon due to release later this year.

In 2021, a sealed rare copy of The Legend of Zelda for the Nintendo Entertainment System sold for $870,000 when put up for auction.

Pokémon Red (Nintendo Gameboy)

Pokémon is one of the most recognizable brands in the world, and Pokémon Red and Blue started it all on Gameboy in 1996, and I’m not embarrassed to say I remember playing it on my Gameboy in high school. The game sold almost 32 million units, and pretty much every Pokémon game after it has followed its design.

At an auction, a Pokémon Red copy sold for $84,000 in 2020, which could get you 21,000 Pokémon Booster Packs – yes, I did the math.

You must think about rarity, condition, and historical significance when selling games. For example, a popular game from the 1980s may not be worth much, but that same game, unopened and in mint condition, could be worth hundreds of thousands.
