We all love a good shadow drop. There’s a specific kind of rush when a State of Play ends and you realize you can play a brand new game right now. That’s exactly what happened with God of War Sons of Sparta. It looked like a fantastic throwback—a gritty, 2D action-platformer giving us a look at a younger Kratos.
But that excitement hit a massive speed bump the moment players tried to pick up a second controller. If you rushed to the PlayStation Store seeing the “1-2 Players” tag and the plural title, you probably assumed this was a co-op adventure. Unfortunately, the reality is a lot more complicated and, honestly, a bit frustrating.

The “Hidden” Multiplayer Mode
Here is the deal. You cannot play the campaign with a friend. Santa Monica Studio had to step in nearly 24 hours after launch to clarify what was going on. The backlash was getting loud because the option to add a second player simply didn’t exist in the main menu.
It turns out, the co-op is locked behind a completion wall. You have to beat the entire single-player story mode first. Only after the credits roll do you unlock a specific “Challenge Mode.” This is the only part of the game that supports local co-op.
❗PSA: God of War Sons of Sparta 2-Player Mode
— Santa Monica Studio – God of War Sons of Sparta (@SonySantaMonica) February 13, 2026
After completing Sons of Sparta's main story, you will unlock a challenge mode that can be played solo or with local 2-player couch co-op.
Why Fans Are Disappointed
The frustration here is totally understandable. The marketing really leaned into the “brothers” aspect. The game is called Sons (plural) of Sparta. The trailers showed Kratos and his brother Deimos fighting together. The store page explicitly listed multiplayer support.
Reddit threads are currently full of players who bought this specifically for a couch co-op night, only to realize they were stuck playing solo. To make matters messier, original series creator David Jaffe has already weighed in, citing the “worst decisions the God of War team has ever made” on how it handles Kratos’ character. It’s been a rough launch week.
In Conclusion: Solo Warriors Only (For Now)
If you are looking for a solo beat-em-up to kill a weekend, this might still scratch that itch. The combat looks snappy and the pixel art style is undeniable eye candy for retro fans. But if you had your heart set on a cooperative experience to share with a partner or friend, keep your wallet closed for now.
The co-op here is a post-game bonus, not a core feature. Unless the developers decide to patch in campaign support later, Sons of Sparta is a lonely road to walk.
