System Shock is one of the most influential game in history, while Doom certainly is the father of all FPS, System Shock on the other hand is the father of the FPS story telling, cementing itself with a very interesting story and one of the most beloved AI antagonist of all. Despite the lack of praise and attention this title is subjected, it’s needless to say that without it title such as Bioshock, Dishonored and the Prey remake wouldn’t have existed.
Thus the team at Nightdive Studio, a team notoriously known in their effort in bringing old title back to life by remastering them to run on modern system, often bringing several improvements of different version into one, has dived into a very important and most challenging task, remaking the original System Shock. Readapting it to a modern audience, by still keeping what people loved about it. Now the remake is leaning more toward action adventure in first person, with several QoL directly from the sequel, but also keeping and turning up the horror and creepy elements, which is also more vivid in the representation of the death scenes animation, which were already creepy enough in the original. Not to mention expand upon the lore thanks to the universe expanded in System Shock 2, and thus giving more explanations on certain aspects, like how Shodan “manufacture” her army of cyborgs and mutants.
With a story almost left untouched, the game still take place in 2072, where we play as an unnamed hacker, who caught redhanded during an attempt at stealing data about the Citadel Station, property of TriOptimum Corporation, are basically given a second chance by getting not only our charges dropped but also receiving a military grade neural implant by the executive Edward Diego, in exchange of hacking into the station AI, SHODAN, and giving its control to Diego after removing the AI ethical restraints. After the surgery we are put in a 6 month coma to recover from it, but at our awakening we notice things has gone south, with SHODAN taking control of the station and turning everything into her puppets, with the human crew either killed, turned into obedient cyborgs or being subjected to mutation due to experiments. Thus we’ll find ourselves trying to destroy Shodan and find a way out of the Citadel.
With a pretty good price of 39,99€, already available at less than 30€ on keyshop and a demo on top of it, there’s enough confidence from the team and good feedback form the player to give this series the love it actually deserve. The game will launch on the 30th, and I highly suggest trying the demo in the meanwhile and make your opinion based on it.

System Shock is one of those iconic sci-fi games from which most modern titles are inspired. Many FPS and survival horrors use the gameplay elements we first saw in this classic game, and of course the release of the remake is a major event.
The original game was released almost 30 years ago, so we can expect huge changes in the visual aspect. The movements will also be much smoother, the textures more detailed and the light more realistic. Although there are many changes, the developers promise to stay true to the original System Shock. Despite the fact that the release date has been delayed once again, I really hope that the game will live up to our expectations.
The anthology FPS System Shock is back after 29 years! It’s an emblematic game because it lays the foundations of gameplay widely reused afterwards. Taking place in space, the atmosphere is distressing, heavy, relatively dark, no walk in the park here, we feel caught by a hypothetical threat all the time. We like the survival horror side of the game, which will inspire many others later on.
The remake necessarily means new features, but also and above all a huge work on the graphics, the sound atmosphere, the shadow and light effects, the textures, the impacts of firearms and melee. We hope that the essence of the original game will be preserved, and sublimated thanks to the modern techniques we know nowadays. In any case it promises.
