Virtual reality may not command the same attention it did a few years ago but the latest VR Games Showcase has given the format plenty to talk about. Among the announcements was the reveal of System Shock VR, an official new version of Nightdive Studios’ sci-fi classic being developed with Flat2VR Studios. The game is coming to Meta Quest, PSVR2, and PC VR, although there is still no release date to mark on the calendar.
Official System Shock VR Announced
While many people in the industry have already regarded VR as a dying space or an increasingly niche community, the recent VR Games Showcase may prove otherwise. Granted, we are nowhere near the level of attention VR had around five years ago, but Flat2VR is putting the format right back in the spotlight with several interesting announcements. The clear highlight, at least for us, was the official VR port of System Shock.
The game is actually already playable in VR but only through mods. This upcoming release will be an official one from Flat2VR in partnership with Nightdive Studios. bringing the game to Meta Quest, PSVR2, and PC VR. Nightdive’s modern version of System Shock rebuilt the classic immersive sim using its own KEX engine, giving the game a solid foundation for another trip into Citadel Station.
System Shock isn’t the only notable game coming from this partnership either. Flat2VR and Nightdive are also working on an official VR version of High on Life for the same platforms. The original game was built for traditional flatscreen systems despite Squanch Games’ previous experience with VR.
That gives Flat2VR two games with established audiences and recognizable names, which is a pretty good way to make the case that there is still room for bigger flatscreen games in VR. The reaction from fans was also very positive, with players across the VR community already looking forward to experiencing both games in a headset, officially.
However, as exciting as this sounds and we really hope this pans out, it is also not a bad idea to manage expectations. Nightdive Studios, backed by Meta before eventually pulling out, was developing an official System Shock 2 VR port. No official cancellation or shelving announcement was made but it is probably safe to assume that that project has now been abandoned.
For now, let’s hope and get excited for System Shock VR and High on Life VR. No release window has been set but we’ll let you know once the information is out.
