When Tides Turn Unveils Wreckreation 2 After Publisher Split
UK-based indie studio When Tides Turn—formerly known as Three Fields Entertainment—has officially announced Wreckreation 2. The reveal follows a turbulent period where previous publisher THQ Nordic withdrew support shortly after the release of the original Wreckreation.
This forced the team to restructure and secure independent funding through UK government grants and private investment. Led by former Criterion Games studio head Fiona Sperry, the development team includes veterans who worked on iconic racing titles such as Burnout Paradise, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, and Need for Speed: Most Wanted.
Rather than attempting to fix the original title’s sprawling sandbox via prolonged updates, the studio opted for a clean slate built around direct community feedback.
“Over the last six months, we spent a lot of time talking to players, moderators, and each other about what worked and what didn’t,” Sperry explained in interviews with Rock Paper Shotgun. “We didn’t need a bigger game. We just needed a more focused one.”
Building on Burnout and an underwhelming predecessor are Wreckreation 2’s missions, and so far it’s a promising patch of Paradisehttps://t.co/zkadObySoi

How Does Heartbreak City Change the Driving Experience?
Heartbreak City replaces the previous entry’s expansive, sparse map with a dense coastal metropolis. This new map features urban avenues, docks, industrial sectors, and an airport.
The tighter environment significantly increases traffic density, destructible objects, and collision frequency. Players are forced into high-speed tactical combat and aggressive overtaking moves across every event.
Art Director Phil Pillpot noted that player feedback strongly favored environments that feel active and lived-in. Heartbreak City incorporates building-lined streets, narrow alleyways, and layered vertical shortcuts reminiscent of Burnout Revenge.
Vehicle physics have also been heavily modified, with cars carrying noticeably more weight. This improves handling stability while making side-by-side trading and opponent takedowns feel incredibly visceral.
Vehicle deformation features expanded bodywork damage, allowing bumpers, panels, and wheels to detach dynamically during multi-car pileups. Customization has been overhauled to encourage deep attachment to specific vehicles. Players can upgrade base models like the Huntsville Nebraska muscle car or the Dearborn & Schaeffer Nightranger hypercar.

What Game Modes and Development Plans Are Confirmed?
Wreckreation 2 will launch with traditional races, 1v1 face-offs, Road Rage events, and Wreckoning time trials. Additional plans are confirmed for Pursuit, Marked Man, Eliminator, and Accident Blackspot crash modes.
Development relies heavily on iterative public demos for community feedback, targeting a 2027 release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
While user-generated track creation was a core pillar of the first game, When Tides Turn has temporarily sidelined complex track construction tools. This allows them to prioritize core handling and race mechanics. Route-sharing and custom event placement tools are scheduled to return much closer to the final release.
Rather than launching into a paid Early Access state, the studio is deploying limited-time private and public playtest builds via Steam. These temporary demo windows allow the developers to harvest data to refine vehicle weight distribution, and adjust artificial intelligence aggressiveness based on live player interaction.
