SEMI-SEQUELS AND AAA GAMES
Gamers want the best in their games, particularly AAA games, and developers and publishers want to deliver a game that makes as much money as possible. AAA games mean big budgets and large development teams, and those bring massive expectations from players.
As those expectations continue to rise, many games take longer to develop, often resulting in delays. This has seen some companies turn to semi-sequels temporarily to keep the money coming in and fans appeased. But could semi-sequels replace AAA games?
WHAT IS A SEMI-SEQUEL?
Semi-sequels are like the cool cousins of your favorite video games. Think of them as the rebels of the gaming world, taking what was great about their predecessors and giving it a unique spin.
They offer an experience that’s just as thrilling but often in a smaller package, like the action-packed highlight reel of a beloved series. They’re all about shaking things up, offering a fresh perspective, and diving deeper into specific characters or elements from the original game.
It’s important to note that they are standalone games that exist in the same universe as previous games. They are not direct sequels.
ARE SEMI-SEQUELS JUST DLC?
No. A DLC is an additional content add-on for a game, such as an expansion. Semi-sequels are complete games and don’t require the purchase of previous games.
WHAT IS AN EXAMPLE?
A great example would be Half-Life: Alyx. It’s not the Half-Life 3 that fans wanted, but it’s set in the same universe and shares other elements within the previous games while maintaining its unique gameplay and story.
ARE THEY GOOD FOR GAMING?
Rather than seeing them as replacing AAA games, semi-sequels should be considered as an expansion of the franchise on which they are based.
an expansion of the franchise on which they are based. They allow developers to explore other characters, stories, and play with other gameplay ideas while not interrupting what makes their AAA games so popular and successful.
For fans of a series, a semi-sequel can also give them something else to look forward to and enjoy while waiting for the next big release.
IS THERE A RISK?
If done wrong or done as a quick cash grab, developers and publishers can destroy their reputation and even their other games.
Semi-sequels should be done with careful planning. There should be a clear understanding of what players expect.
A poor game, after all, is a poor game. And fans will remember, particularly if it features a character or franchise they love.
SUMMARY
So, semi-sequels can either be a poor effort to grab a quick buck by a developer or publisher or a successful stopgap between the releases of larger games in a popular franchise.
Gaming is constantly evolving, and trends are always changing. But as the years go on, AAA games are struggling more and more to stay ahead of the industry as it matures.
Some say graphics matter, storyline matters, or gameplay is the most essential part of a game. And some want it all.
For those, AAA games will always be the future of gaming. But for everyone else, semi-sequels may be the way forward.

If the universe in which the game takes place is good and of high quality, I see great future for semi-sequels. They're a way of exploring other stories without changing the previous gameplay too much and therefore not as expensive as a AAA game. I think there's a future in both indie and AAA games, the latter can be quite expensive and time-consuming to make, but there will always be demand for new IPs and sequels of previous ones.
