Sega issues full refunds for Space Marine Master Crafted Edition on Steam until July 10, plus 50% discount for Anniversary owners.

The past few months have shown how good remasters can be when done right. We’ve seen several iconic classics return with modern polish, and for the most part, it went really well.

But sadly, that’s not the case with Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine Master Crafted Edition. Instead of building on the hype of its legacy and riding the success of Space Marine 2, this remaster stumbled and hard.

When SEGA first announced the Master Crafted Edition, fans were genuinely excited. Space Marine 2 had just landed a hit both critically and commercially, and the idea of returning to the original with modern upgrades sounded like the perfect move.

The remaster was supposed to include higher fidelity visuals and improved textures, support for 4K resolution, better character models, a modernized control scheme and interface overhaul, and remastered audio. But when the game dropped, players quickly realized those upgrades were either barely noticeable or completely missing. Many said it looked like the old Xbox 360 version just running on PC. Hardly the visual and technical leap they were promised.

The backlash came fast. Steam reviews are now Mostly Negative, with players calling out not just the lack of real improvements but also the steep price point that didn’t reflect the quality. It didn’t take long for SEGA to respond.

   

In less than a month since launch, SEGA announced a full refund for everyone who bought the Master Crafted Edition on Steam, regardless of playtime. They also listened to long-time fans of the series and introduced a 50% upgrade path discount for those who already own Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine – Anniversary Edition.

If you do, the discount will show up at checkout automatically. If you already purchased the Master Crafted Edition though without the discount, you can still take advantage of it. Just request a refund through Steam Support, then repurchase the game to get the discounted price at checkout. Both the refund and the discount are available until 6 PM BST / 10 PM PST on July 10, 2025.

For players who choose to stick with the game despite the rocky launch, SEGA isn’t walking away. The devs are actively working on a series of patches that will roll out in the coming weeks. These updates will address gameplay issues, controller and platform support, networking bugs, audio/visual improvements, localization fixes, and general UI/UX polish.

SEGA also included a formal apology in their statement, a rare and welcome gesture from a major publisher. It’s refreshing to see a studio take ownership of mistakes, and it’s clear that SEGA still values the dedicated fanbase that’s kept Space Marine alive all these years.
