Nintendo Reportedly Holding Switch 2 Dev Kits From Free-to-Play Developers

Nintendo is reportedly limiting Switch 2 dev kits for free-to-play studios, delaying UFL’s development on the new console.

Nintendo Switch 2 Dev Kits

In a recent report by Football Gaming Zone, a media briefing was held with Strikerz CEO Eugene Nashilov, where the latter was asked whether UFL, the studio’s free-to-play title, will come to Nintendo Switch 2. Well, it looks like not anytime soon.

Nintendo Claimed To Hold Dev Kits From F2P Devs

The question was usual but no one expected Nashilov’s answer. He may not be insinuating something but the community immediately picked up the “why” in his statement. Basically, they have every intention to bring UFL to Switch 2 but, as he claimed, Nintendo isn’t eager to deliver dev kits to free-to-play developers.

He said, “Switch 2 version is not yet in development, but it will be. As of right now, Nintendo is not very much actively giving development kits to free-to-play developers. That’s a global trend, and we’re a part of that. Once we have our hands on the new device and we start working with it, then, most likely, yes

Apparently, the studio already made an order for the Switch 2 dev kits earlier this year but has not gotten it yet.

While he specifically mentioned F2P developers, this issue actually already went around during Gamsecon. According to an Insider Gaming report during that time, multiple devs including some AAA studios are having a hard time getting these kits. It is claimed that Nintendo is even encouraging just releasing on Switch and “rely on backwards compatibility.”

It’s very unusual how Nintendo is playing this. There’s no clear reason as to why the dev kits are taking so long and what’s the process or criteria of who gets it first. Are they trying to release Switch 2 versions of their “preferred” titles first? Or there’s simply just not enough dev kits?

UFL is currently available on Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. It is expected to be released for PC in November 2025.
