Microsoft has announced an Xbox “reset” as the company immediately lays off 1,600 staff, will lay off 3,200 by the end of the fiscal year, and sells off four studios.

- Microsoft will eliminate 3,200 roles within the Xbox division by the end of fiscal year 2027, with 1,600 positions cut immediately.
- Four internal studios—Double Fine, Compulsion Games, Ninja Theory, and Undead Labs—are being sold or spun off as part of a move toward a leaner operating model.
- Despite the restructuring, Microsoft confirmed that no publicly announced first-party games or projects are being canceled.
Microsoft is currently executing a comprehensive organizational “reset” across Xbox, which sees four studios, Ninja Theory, Undead Labs, Compulsion Games, and Double Fine Productions sold off.
In a statement, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma explicitly stated that the division has been operating at margins 3-10x lower than comparable platform businesses, with some studios losing 64 cents for every dollar invested.
Fortunately, Sharma has also revealed that no first-party Xbox titles or projects will be canceled as part of the layoffs and restructuring.

Why is Microsoft Restructuring the Xbox Division?
Microsoft is restructuring to address chronic financial inefficiencies and a high cost-to-revenue ratio that has persisted since the start of the current console generation.
The company will eliminate 1,600 positions immediately, with a total reduction of 3,200 staff members planned through the end of fiscal year 2027.
This initiative moves the division away from an aggressive acquisition-based growth model toward a strategy focused on sustainable financial performance and streamlined operations.
Which Studios Are Affected by the Xbox Big Reset?
The “Xbox Big Reset” includes the divestment of four internal development teams, moving them either to independent status or new ownership structures.
While management is finalizing these transitions, existing first-party projects currently in development are expected to continue under new arrangements, ensuring that announced titles remain on the Xbox roadmap.
What Does This Mean for the Future of Xbox Games?
The future roadmap for Xbox relies on a leaner internal structure, focusing resources on core pillars that have proven to generate consistent value.
By reducing management layers and shifting investment toward high-priority projects, the organization expects to return to growth. Services such as Xbox Game Pass continue to function as a central component of this strategy, providing a steady distribution channel for content across PC and console ecosystems.
