Xbox Sends Game Pass Members Notification for Modern Warfare 4 Launch

Xbox issues a direct notification to Game Pass subscribers clarifying that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will not be a day-one release.

Call of Duty fans counting down to the release of Modern Warfare 4 may have noticed a new message from Xbox. Ahead of launch, Xbox has started notifying Game Pass subscribers that the upcoming shooter will not be available through the service on day-one. While this isn’t a new announcement, it’s a clear encouragement to not wait for it to join and purchase the game now to enjoy it at launch.

Xbox Reminds Game Pass Members That MW4 Isn’t a Day-One Launch

Call of Duty fans were ecstatic when Microsoft and Activision announced that Call of Duty Black Ops 6 would release day-one on Game Pass. As a member, that was a great deal. But even then, many people felt it probably wasn’t the best long-term move since Call of Duty is one of gaming’s biggest money makers and putting a brand-new entry on a subscription service was almost certain to affect full-price sales.

That ended up being the case so it wasn’t much of a surprise when Black Ops 7 didn’t follow the same path. The same goes for succeeding titles starting with Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 which launches on October 23, 2026.

To avoid any confusion and perhaps cut down on some wishful thinking, Xbox has now begun sending notifications to Game Pass members reiterating that Modern Warfare 4 will not be available on Game Pass at launch. Instead, it is scheduled to join the service Holiday 2027, a full year after its release. So players who want to jump in on day-one are being encouraged to purchase the game rather than wait for its eventual Game Pass debut.

This isn’t really news since the information was originally announced when the game was revealed. However, Xbox is taking steps now to make sure that fans are reminded to buy the game directly. Considering the big reset currently happening within Xbox, it is not surprising they are actively trying to increase direct income.

While some Game Pass subscribers may be disappointed, Xbox has to balance the value of the subscription service with the financial importance of Call of Duty’s annual releases.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 officially releases on October 23, 2026 for PC, Playstation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Early access is available on October 16, 2026 for preorders.
