Activision confirms the modern PlayStation ports of Call of Duty Black Ops 1 and 2 support crossplay, making it easier to play with friends.
- Activision confirmed that the new PS4 and PS5 versions of Black Ops 1 and Black Ops 2 support full crossplay between both modern PlayStation consoles.
- Players who own the Season Pass can seamlessly matchmake with those who only own the base games without restriction.
- PlayStation crossplay is strictly between modern systems and does not extend to the original PS3 versions of the games.
Call of Duty fans received some welcome clarification following the launch of the PlayStation versions of Call of Duty Black Ops and Black Ops 2. While the ports have sparked a lot of discussion over their “modern state”, Activision has confirmed one feature that many players were hoping to see. It may not solve every complaint but it does make playing with friends easier across modern PlayStation consoles.
Activision Confirms Crossplay on Black Ops 1 and 2
Call of Duty fans were over the moon when ports of the classic Black Ops 1 and Black Ops 2 were announced for modern platforms. The $40 price tag did raise some eyebrows but for nostalgic players, the cost was mostly beside the point. Having the opportunity to experience these two classic titles on modern PlayStation consoles was bound to be an experience.
Unfortunately, that experience did not align with initial expectations upon release. The games arrived as ports in the most literal sense, lacking the modern graphics and frame rates you would expect in this day and age. Granted, these are not remasters or remakes but even visual blemishes from the originals were left. For the price, it felt reasonable to expect a bit more refinement.
Thankfully, this rollercoaster of good and bad news is swinging back to the positive side. Activision has now confirmed that the PS4 and PS5 versions of Black Ops and Black Ops 2 support crossplay between both Playstation consoles, a feature that wasn’t mentioned before launch. It is worth noting that this feature does not extend to the PS3 version. The post also clarified that players who own the Season Pass can still matchmake with players who don’t own it.
So, while the visual state is not quite what people hoped for (if it’s any consolation, it runs noticeably better than the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S versions), at least we have crossplay.
