Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 combines two of the beloved games in Japan, Puyo Puyo and Tetris. In Tetris you must complete a line of blocks in order to clear them and in Puyo Puyo you must match 4 or more Puyos with the same color. Clearing your board will dump garbage on your opponent’s board.
Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 doesn’t reinvent the wheel – that was already done in the first game in this series. What this sequel does is keep what worked so well about the original while adding to or refining everything else. Clear, expansive tutorials make it more approachable, a variety of online Puzzle Leagues make the depth of online play stronger, and the new Skill Battle mode adds a smart twist to the gameplay. This is a vibrant and enjoyable puzzle game that is packed with content and variety.
Puyo Puyo 2 could never have hoped to have the same impact as the first game did, but it remains a brilliant puzzle title nevertheless. While some may feel it’s not quite different enough from its predecessor, the new single-player story is just as entertaining as the last one, and the Skill Battle mode adds interesting mechanics to the mix.
