Mafia II is an open-world action-adventure game developed by Hangar 13 and D3T the second game in the remastered trilogy step into the shoes of War hero Vito Scaletta as he becomes entangled with the mob hoping to pay off his father’s debts, prove yourself to the family by tackling jobs of bigger and bigger significance, but be careful large rewards means bigger consequences.
If you are not a fan of this type of gameplay experience, Mafia II will not be an enjoyable title for you. However, if you like games that take the time to present you with a detailed story that is told in a very rigid sequence, this title will certainly be worth your time. Though I would have liked to have seen more of Empire City and would have relished more exploration options, the story presented in Mafia II made the overall experience worthwhile. Mafia II is not a game for everyone, but it certainly fulfills expectations for its target audience.
After the 15-or-so hours it might take you to gun through Vito’s story, it’s hard not to come away with the sense that there should have been more to do in this beautiful city. Yet while you might be disappointed with what Mafia II doesn’t do, it’s hard to be disappointed by what this excellent game does do: deliver fun shoot-outs and pockets of shocking brutality in a world you’re delighted to be a part of.
I walked into my experience of Mafia II with no real expectations other than hearing my colleague’s praise. What I walked away with after playing through the story was a sense of awe and amazement that I haven’t had since Alan Wake. There are very few games out today of this caliber that I really enjoy and wish it wouldn’t stop. Mafia II is a definite must buy and one game that I won’t soon forget. Family, loyalty and betrayal never looked so good.
