A surprise leak from Japan suggests Ubisoft is preparing to relaunch its hit shooter. Posters spotted in Tokyo during an eSports event explicitly advertise The Division Definitive Edition, a title that has not been officially announced by the publisher.

The discovery comes just as the franchise celebrates its 10th anniversary, sparking speculation about a potential remaster or a new port for upcoming consoles.

The Division Japan Leak Details

Social media users, including @729_yaso and @tubeboze, uploaded images from “FPS Day” in Shinjuku. This event focused on Ubisoft shooters like Rainbow Six: Siege and The Division 2, but the signage stole the show.

The posters clearly display the logo for a “Definitive Edition” of the original The Division. While Ubisoft has not commented, the timing aligns with a scheduled 10th-anniversary panel at the venue.

Recently, Ubisoft pushed a free update enabling 60 FPS on PlayStation 5, proving they haven’t abandoned the original title. However, a full re-release suggests a bigger plan than just a framerate patch.

Switch 2 Theory for The Division

The decision to advertise this unannounced edition in Shinjuku has led industry experts to one conclusion: the Nintendo Switch 2.

Handheld consoles dominate the Japanese gaming market. A “Definitive Edition” optimized for Nintendo’s next-generation hardware would make perfect sense strategically.

It is unlikely Ubisoft wants to split the player base between The Division 1 and 2 on current consoles without a specific reason. A portable version for the successor to the Switch fits that gap perfectly.

The Division 3 Status

This leak lands while Massive Entertainment is deep in production on The Division 3. Executive Producer Julian Gerighty recently hyped the sequel, claiming it will have “as big an impact” as the first game.

Gerighty described the project as a “monster,” confirming active development is underway.

While the third entry is years away, a Definitive Edition of the first game could keep the brand alive and generate revenue to fund the sequel’s massive production costs.

Verdict: Should You Wait?

If this leak points to a Switch 2 port, portable gamers have a lot to be excited about. However, for PC and console players, the “Definitive” tag likely just means a bundle of existing DLCs.

The original game already runs great on modern hardware thanks to backward compatibility updates. If you haven’t played it yet, you don’t need to wait for a full-price re-release.

Does a portable return to snowy New York appeal to you, or is it too late for a remaster?
