With sagas in the portfolio like Fallout and The Elder Scrolls, Bethesda now brings us a new open world RPG but this time in space. I can tell that this is a highly anticipated game and with good reason since this company is know for the vast and complete universes they create in their games. Not much was revealed but from the gameplay shown we can see similarities with the games mentioned above like the looting, different gear and stats and the possibility to change from first to third person and vice-versa. This is a must for me if the game lives up to standards and with the modding community this is the kind of game to have tons of replayability.
Starfield is coming in 2023, finally (well, it’s not 100% sure yet…). Bethesda is under pressure from Microsoft though, which has a hole in its schedule and struggles to keep up with Sony’s releases (although gamers are also quite dissatisfied with Sony’s exclusives too).
Yet the game has been delayed until the fall. Is this good news? Clearly yes. Bethesda games are often released buggy, unfinished, and several months late in development. So if it’s to face a bad game experience and have to wait 6 months… no need!
About the game itself: an open world RPG that focuses on planet exploration. Space flight is featured, planetary as well (skimming), with combat planned as well. But the gameplay on land should not normally be neglected. The content should be monstrous, the map infinitely bigger than Skyrim and co., even if the planets won’t be the size of No Man’s Sky’s (if they’re not empty: we don’t care…). Hopefully the game won’t be too repetitive in terms of everything secondary, and the lore will be interesting, as will the writing. But Bethesda has gigantic ambitions. Eventually, even if it’s 2 years after release, with updates and DLCs + of course… mods, the game should be a must-have, and who knows, become the new reference of AAA games in terms of RPGs, while waiting for TES VI .
Starfield is Bethesda most ambitious project yet, after being hit once again with a small delay that moved the release window from June to the 6th of September (not without critics mind you), Todd Howard himself has explained various new details about the game, including an important piece of news for a whole show dedicated to Starfield in June, as Microsoft won’t be joining E3 of this year but will host his own show to reveal new games with their own pacing.
As for Starfield, it’s the first new IP for Bethesda in over 25 years, from the spinoff action adventure The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard, as for the rest of the big IPs other than TES are indeed acquired. Starfield sets itself apart from the other “earthly” Bethesda games wit the objective to explore the space!
The game takes place in the year 2330, where humanity has expanded and explored beyond our solar system, leading into the unknown. Here the protagonist will join the last remaining exploration faction, the Constellation, in order to find new and rare artifacts, from a humble origin as a space miner toward making a name for yourself in the universe.
From the trailers a glimpse of content shown, we can easily tell that while exploration takes a big role, so does the shooting. There seems to be hostile factions throughout the game, so we’ll have a rather big arsenal of weapons at our disposals, from submachineguns, revolvers, pistols, rifle and many more each being subdivided into 3 main categories: Physical, Energy and Electromagnetic.
Also are back certain RPG elements staple of Bethesda’s games, such as the loot menu (quick loot from Fallout 4), fast weapon selection from Doom, being able to switch back and forth from 1st person view to 3rd person view, companions and Damage Resistance stat for your gear, now divided into 4 categories to resist the harsh weather during explorations (thermal, airbone, corrosive and irradiation) and the 3 combat related stats already mentioned for the weapons.
Hopefully we’ll get to see more and more news in the upcomoing months with the definitive infodump on June’s Microsoft show!
Bethesda is good at making open world RPG, that’s why the release of Starfield is a huge event. Set in space-themed setting, this game is promising to be vast, immersive and extremely gorgeous. It is also an ambitious project in science fiction genre, as it should bring some new gameplay elements and maybe even become iconic among others.
Of course, Bethesda will keep some features that made Fallout and Skyrim so remarquable. However, they plan to bring a lot more, and it’s surely going to be an epic adventure. In Starfield, we’ll take the role of an astronaut that we can customize beforehand. More than that, space ships and weapons will also be customizable. During the journey we’ll get to discover over a thousand of different planets. Most of them probably won’t have an impact on the story but will give an opportunity to harvest some resources.
Starfield will not support co-op or multiplayers, but developers claim that the game will feature mods. And it means that in the years following its release, we will surely see some interesting content that will make the game even bigger.
The first fully original game by Bethesda in 25 years, which has been in development for over 5 years, merits a lot of anticipation. This massive open world RPG is set in space, where you can explore more than 100 systems with over 1000 planets. The all-important story is a closely guarded secret, but we know that the game is set in 2330, 20 years after a huge war for colonial control. You’ll play the role of a member of Constellation, an organization of space explorers trying to navigate what remains of the aftermath.
Elements of the game will be flying ships in outer space, as well as a more considered focus on resource management, crafting and base building, and real-time combat with firearms. However, the core of the game remains classic Bethesda, exploring wide open spaces and settlements. However, dialogue will also be an important part of the game, with four times as much dialogue as Skyrim.
